Western Wyoming Community College

by JettaDP

Has anyone attended this school or has considered attending? What are your general thoughts on the school? I've heard it is very difficult to get into mainly because of the small amount of spaces they available.

I took some gen ed classes back in 2000 - I applied to the nursing program but didn't get in. There must have been 100+ people applying for 16 spots. The campus in general seemed really nice and i liked the classes that I took. I was also considering the respiratory therapy program and took the intro classes but i got intimidated by all the traveling you have to do for the clinicals.

They still have a high amount of applicants. They do have more spots open though. I think the class size is 28 now. I really like the school so far. I've taken all of my pre- and core- classes there so I would like to stay there. But with the competition being so fierce......I just don't know.

Yes wyo CC's admit on a competitive basis. When I was there the rumor was (probably true) that if you were 'somebody' in the community, that would get you in more than anything else and it wasn't really fair how they decided who got in. Don't know if that has changed or not.

I've heard that as well. But I do know a couple of girls from Star Valley that got into the program last year without having any community ties or ties to the faculty. But yes, I've heard that it helps to know the faculty on a personal basis. Which sucks, but all I can do is apply and see what happens.

I was in the program four years ago with 31 other students. By the end of the year we had lost six of them because they failed to achieve 75% or better on their exams. To be fair about half of those who failed came into the program with less than exemplary grades because they were sponsored by the hospitals in Evanston, WY and they only needed C's or better. That type of sponsership has now ended. It is my understanding that this past year only three students failed to make the grade. When I was there I was told that the pass rate on the NCLEX by their graduates taking it the first time was in the 80% range so I guess they are doing something right. The program uses problem based learning which is quite different than the normal lecture/homework model and takes some getting used to.
Good Luck
