Nursing in Saudi Arabia

Does anyone here have any experience with nursing in Saudi Arabia? I'm seriously considering it. They have one year contracts available through Med-Hunters. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

A friend of mine took a 6 month job in Saudi. Here is what she told me. You are not allowed out of your apt without a burka. You are not allowed to shop for yourself. A man has to do your shopping for anything even clothes. you can wear a uniform at work but you are not allowed off the floor you are working. You are lucky if you get any breaks or lunch, most times you don't. You can not even touch a man, you have to look away, in fact you can't even make eye contact. She said that it is women and children that she worked with.

She made good money and was tax-free, but she hated it and would never, ever, do it again. It was just not worth it and it felt more like slavery. Oh yeah she told me this too if you are a blonde dye your hair dark because the Saudi men will snatch you up becuse to them blonde means "whore"

Hi! I just want to share my experience in working in saudi arabia. I worked for king faisal specialist hospital jeddah for 8 years, It was the best time of my life i was earning 3x compared to the salary of other filipino nurses in small hospitals there. Lived alone in a flat(not sharing),enjoyed the amenities of the accomodation with swimming pool,sauna,gym and other recreational amenities.The accomodation guard doesnt care and check on your apartment, they dont even care if you still lived there as long as you report on your duty on time. I can go to a supermarket wearing my scrub suit.I have worked with male western nurses as well, we also have Male nurses from Jordan, we are free to talk to them and join them in the smoking area during breaks, we are free to travel to other countries during holidays. (i mean the hospital can sponsor you,and you can get a visa wtout any problem) I am allowed to get my husband,children,parents as my dependent on my own expense of course. I can go to Christian religious activities. All i can say is "it was the best time of my life.

National Guard offers the best package too!Nice hospital and accomodation. They'll give you 2way free air ticket every 6 months i heard..

I can vote for King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center-jeddah, i worked there for many years, if given the chance to go back. I wish i can.

By the way....i'm a filipina too

I hear the money is good, but what is a typical wage/salary for an American nurse working in Saudi? I know the money is tax free, but what is the base?

I spent years in Bahrain and Oman and am now graduating from a nursing program. I will be honored if I have the chance to live and work in one of the Gulf States again. The nurse who goes there must consider themself a social and professional ambassador and find it within themselves to be exceptionally tolerant as well as careful of their actions and words. In this sense they must be more than just a nurse looking for a job- they must be looking for an adventure and a different challenge.

Well, for those who said all of that about Saudi, that 100% not true, the girls can do shopping alone, can go out alone, can do everything they like alone no one would ask her anything. Yes driving for girls not allowed, it is because in our culture girls should be treated like queen they are not slaves (as some people think) if you search well you will find more about saudi, if you think Saudi like that...why female nurses who go to Saudi stay more than 10 years, I know some where they work in, for example, Natioanl guard hospitals, or King Faisal Hospital, been there for ages why they dont complain that????? anyway for the interest in working In Saudi

Nice cop out! Women are not equals there. If they were, they would be able to choose to drive. The story you give is a broad one. The remote areas are stricter than the areas frequented by westerners.

Exactly. Go ask Enzo Ferrari if he considered driving to be "slave's work".

The bottom line is that no society needs to dictate what half the population should or shouldn't do at the other half's whim; Happens all the time but that doesn't make it a good thing.

That aside, I'd love to travel there someday, when liberality isn't thought of as the perversion of imperialist swine.

Try Saudi Aramco in Dhahran. There is an enormous compound there, like a small town, with a hospital inside of it. Women are allowed to drive within it

Hi guys.. i'm kinda confuse right now. I applied as a nurse in jeddah coz i really wanted to practice my profession on a hospital setting. I'm currently working now as a company nurse. When my boyfriend whose in US right now learned about my plan, he proposed to me and wants us to get married as soon as possible. He'll be coming back in the philippines this february 2010. I love him but it feels like i'm not ready yet to get married and if i'll stay in US, it would be hard for me to look for a job as a nurse because of lack of hospital experience. Please help me...

This is not true, at least not in all reagions in Saudi Arabia. I am a Saudi nurse and I know how is the situation there. If you work in eastern or western reagion, there is more freedom. In the center, they are more restricted. In eastern region where I work, nurses from everywhere are working here and they have freedom more than us. they should wear decent clothes but they are not forced to cover their hairs or their faces especially in Dhahran. They can't drive cars, but they can go to any Shopping center or malls for shopping. It is not ture that u have to have a male with u to shop anything. U can buy anything u want from any store. Alcoholic beverages are not permitted since they are prohibitted in Islam. Also, u can't touch any male in front of people if he is not from your relatives. Touching patients though is socially acceptable from non muslims nurse but you should also consider the cultural view of the individuals. some patients don't like that, and some are don't mind. in hospital there is more freadome and foreign nurses are the majority in Saudi hospital, therefore, I don't think any one would feel herself as starnger. Thats what I really know and what I am sure about. Don't generalize an idea from someone to all reagions in Saudi Arabia because this country is large and has many diffrenent backgrounds.

and make sure to look at the different cities )Dammam, Dhahran, Jeddah and Riyadh). Riyadh is the most restricted area for some one who came from a very open country as the US, while other cities are more open.

i work in saudi arbia and its not what you think! not because the women dont drive care it means its a bad i dea or its a kind of Torture you can do whatever u want without taking a man with u u can go to malls ride a taxi but u have to ware uniform call abaia but u dont have to cover ur face as what many people has said so.. its really a safe country men dont talk to u without an excuse u live like A

princess.. u may not allowed to drive but there are many drivers u can call! saudi has many places u can go and have fun with ur friends and the hospital there are very larg and i have day off and u take alot of money .. u really will feeel blassed!! people who have no i dea or havent been there befor .. dont talk about it if u dont know ... not because u hear things could be true! go chek it by ur self and dont lesn to anyone.. not becuse its an islamic country means its bad its the best country who takes care if women ! queens dont drive cars by their owns .. so saudi's women there are queens !! the men its the one who work really hard to get to his wife there and chilidren A good royal life!!
