Help needed

Hi everyone

Well I am 36 years old and have been contemplating going back to school. I would really like to be a nurse. My mom was a nurse and I just remember how much she loved it. I was bound and determined I was going to be a travel agent or a cruise director. I have a associate degree in tourism recreation. I did start college in 1988 and took general studies classes like english, science, history. My question is what are my steps to get into a local school here. I am in the madison area and it looks like MATC or Blackhawk are my choices. I want to get it done sooner so a bachelors it out of the question.

I would also like to attend either early morning classes or night as I need to keep my fulltime job to pay for bills. I work out of my house now as a allied health recruiter. Yes I do place nurses!! :p

I hear there is a super long waiting list! Is there any hospitals that fund schooling if I sign a contract to work there?

Hi! I attended Gateway Technical College in Kenosha County. I was on the waiting list 2 years, worked full-time then attended school part-time, then I went to school full-time and worked part-time. It took five years total. I'd do it again. I work for a large heath care system, and though they don't pay for school up front they do reimburse you for classes. The classes or degree had to be a "needed" area, which nursing certianly is. I think most large hospital systems in our area offer something similar. Plus there are always scholarships and financial aid through the college. Good luck!

I would highly recommend taking the basic nsg. classes first. I know you probably won't want to, but become a CNA before entering nursing school. It makes you appreciate nursing so much more.......take A&P, Microbiology,Pharm., etc. so you aren't overwhelmed when you begin your nursing courses
