WI RN to IL RN by reciprocity, any problems?

Hello, I will be testing for WI RN in the near future (I hope) and I was wondering if there is anyone out there who had problems or could share their experiences if you had to get your IL RN license by reciprocity? I am going through Excelsiors College Nursing Degree Program and IL will not let me test, but is willing to consider giving me IL RN license by reciprocity with 2 year advanced experience in another state (like WI). Thanks for the input. Silika.

I got my IL license by reciprocity, although I did not attend exclesior, so I can not comment on that part. It took two months for me to get my license because of a computer entry problem with my social security number. Other than that, there was no problem. My only advice is apply earlier than you need your license by.

Endorsing one's license to IL is not a complicated process, just a frustratingly long one. The IDPR is notoriously slow in processing endorsements, so plan to apply several months in advance of your move.

What does this mean "with 2 year advanced experience"?

IL does not recognize newly graduated and newly licensed EC grads. They must have 2 or more years of RN experience in another state before IL will consider issuing them a license. If you are a grad of a program other than EC you do not need to worry about this.

Does this mean no address is required in the new state? Surely establishing residency is required. I'm thinking of moving from Wisconsin to Indiana and of course don't have an Indiana address yet.

You do not need to live in a state to hold a nursing license there -- people frequently apply before they move to a new state, or they move to another state but maintain their "old" license, or they live in one state but work in a neighboring state (or work as a travel nurse). State BONs just want to know your current address, wherever it may be, and you're responsible for notifying them promptly any time you change your address.

Residency only matters in the case of "compact" licenses, and that's a whole 'nother kettle of fish.
