NEW GRAD - MADISON

Try Mercy hospital in Janesville. They are hiring. Just apply to every opening and you'll get a call. At least i did last month. Good luck.

I think most madison hospitals are going with bsns right now.. if they hire a new grad at all. the exception might be select specialty? but i don't know that for sure. good luck.

I've been an RN in southern WI for 21 years...I've never seen hiring as bad as it is right now. There is not a lot of anything available for RNs. I have experienced RN friends out of work, looking for jobs. Market is very tight (my opinion, YMMV, all that). It seems to be a bit better in the Milwaukee area if you are willing to relocate/commute. I was surprised about the 'hiring BSNs' comment...WI has one of the lowest BSN rates in the US. Maybe with the market forces, employers are getting picky...I don't know.

Quickbeam, my sources could always be wrong. I am confident that uw is really pushing the BSN rn and they only hire new grads at certain times anyway. but im not as confident on how much of an influence it is at st. mary's or Meriter. although all are Magnet hospitals. UW...maybe so! That could be. I rarely hear of any BSN preference in WI but UW could certainly be an exception.

I'm in state service and they are putting lots of nurses at risk/potential for layoff right now. My job in community health was eliminated and I barely got a transfer in before all state jobs were frozen. Facilities which have not been fully staffed for 50 years now have waiting lists.

I have been a nurse for 2 years and can't even seem to get a job in WI. UW does have a new grad program that starts in Jan and only new grads that have graduated within the past 6 mos may apply for the program. Experienced nurses must have been at a previous employer for more than 1 year as an RN to even be considered for a job there. Milwaukee seems to have a lot of positions posted everywhere (Aurora, Childrens, Froedart, Wheaton-Franciscan, ets). I have applied to all of these hospitals since Jan.this year and have yet to have an interview or a callback, and I have a BSN! I too applied to Mercy in Janesville, and they have not called back either.

what position did you apply for @ mercy? I was having the same problem when i was applying to only one position at a time. I got a call almost immediately after applying for ALL open positions. I got a call and took the job immediately. given the current hiring situation, i feel pretty lucky to have found this job and so far i am enjoying it. its my first job as a nurse and i'm in the ER so there has been a steep learning curve but i'm hanging in there. good luck. apply for everything.

Being that I am not a new grad, I do not apply for everything. I only apply for the area(s) that I am most interested in. I have worked in a variety of different areas, so I know what I am looking for. I applied to Labor and Delivery, Nursery, and Peds. I have worked in all adult settings and have never been happy in any of these areas. I have gotten to a point where I will not apply for positions that I know I will not like. I know, beggars can't be choosers, but why do something that is going to make me miserable. I have been in the health care field for so long, and you get to a point where you just get sick of the same crap all the time. I went into nursing to work in NICU. This is the area that I LOVE and am most passionate about. So, adult care does not do it for me. I have done that area for so long that I absolutely hate it!
