WGU GPA and Accreditation Questions

Students Western Governors

Updated:   Published

Good day:

Does GPA scale operate on a 0 to 4.0 basis? If not, what's the min and the max?

Is WGU nationally accredited?

Has anyone gone the RN to BSN route through WGU, then pursued a masters degree elsewhere? If yes, did you encounter any problems with the WGU BSN credits / degree?

Thank you.

This has been answered numerous times before but here it is again:

WGU has regional accreditation (which is actually higher than national accreditation). The nursing programs just received another 10-year accreditation from the CCNE. Being a competency-based program, you either pass or fail each course. A pass, when converted to a GPA system equals a 3.0. The only time you might have a problem is if you are applying to a very competitive program that requires a 3.5 GPA or higher. I know someone who just got accepted into a CRNA program who has a BSN from . I have a BSN from Indiana State (which holds the same accreditation as WGU) and I never had an issue when applying for MSN programs. ISU does use a GPA system though, so I graduated with a 3.93 GPA. So, again unless you're applying to a very competitive program you should not have any issues. A BSN from WGU holds all the accreditations that a brick-and-mortar has.

WGU is regionally accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, and it has national nursing accreditation from the CCNE.

Since grants credit based on demonstrating competency, each class is graded on a pass/fail basis. A pass is equal to a 'B' grade; hence, a WGU transcript will reflect a 3.0 grade point average if the student was able to demonstrate competency in all required coursework.
