Suspended WGU enrollments

I just found out that has suspended enrollment for North Carolina perspective students and it may be some type of bump in the road for current students. What in the world is going on? What can be done about this? Is this a NCBON issue or a state/ legislative issue? OMG

They're planning on creating a -NC program, so until that happens, they're putting all distance learning on hold. It's a good thing, not a bad thing.

The NCBON has nothing to do with this. Any program with a clinical component completed in NC have tp be apprpved by the UNC Board of Governors.

I was affected by the enrollment suspension too. My advisor said it would probably take 6 months, have you heard anything else?

I spoke to the BON, and according to the person that I spoke to, it has nothing to do with the -NC curriculum plans, nor any clinical components. The UNCGA requires that all distance universities pay a fee, to serve NC students, and are trying to make WGU pay the fee. So, as per usual, it's about the money. Please feel free to call the BON and confirm, they can also give you the name and number of the person to call at the GA about this issue.

I didn't think it should have anything to do with the NCBON, since we are already licensed nurses. However, the wording of the email I received sure made it sound like it did. Thanks for checking on that. My advisor said it was the NC legislature that is causing the hold up, and that they are reviewing the curriculum of programs that require field experience. I am just so ready to start, I guess this is a good lesson in patience.

There are existing threads about this, and you can do a general on-line search and find the information from the UNC board and NC BON. A growing number of states (the state education authorities, not the BON specifically -- this has nothing to do with nursing specifically) are starting to set limits on on-line educational programs. The UNC board has taken the position that, if a school in another state is providing education to NC residents, that school has to meet the same requirements and be subject to the same oversight that schools physically located within the state of NC are required to meet. The other schools have to register with the state and prove to the UNC board that they meet the state's requirements. Some on-line programs that want to be able to enroll NC students have done that.

It's nothing something that would ever affect me personally, but I think it's a good thing that NC (and the other states doing this) want to protect their citizens and make sure that the education they are getting meets the same minimum quality standards as other education offered in the state. (Same as when you buy insurance from a national insurance company, the policy they sell you has to meet the standards established by your specific state.) It's a basic consumer protection issue.
