Can/Have you got a job with a degree from WGU?

Nursing Students Western Governors

Updated:   Published

I have been talking to a close family friend and I was explaining to her and how great this school sounds. She is currently trying to get into a CSU for Nursing and she said an employer will not see this as a "real" degree because the school its not "known" to any employers ...? She said not to "waste my time"

Has anyone who has graduated with a Nursing Degree from WGU got a job with WGU degree? I know its accredited which is awesome. Does it really matter if the school is "known" to get a job as a RN?

Hope to hear from any WGU graduates so I can prove her wrong.

For what it's worth I work for an HCA facility and I first heard about from my CNO. She was the one telling me about how it's Non-profit, accredited, and a great opportunity for professional development for someone like me that needs to go from ADN to BSN.

And as far as it being online goes, even the brick and mortar schools around here have their adn-to-bsn programs online. I think that a non-online bridge program would be an exception at this time. The rational, I think, is that as an ADN that works in a clinical setting, you're already a nurse and you've already met all the requirements for being a nurse. The BSN stuff is kind of like more ethereal nearly non-sense stuff that may or may not relate to your practice. Don't get me wrong I'm gonna do it, but I pretty much convinced it's only gonna help me towards my career goals, not so much make me a better nurse.

I currently know about a dozen BSN grads that are now working as nurses. About 5 of them were working at the hospital that they are at now, but as transporters, logisitics techs, scrub techs and lab assistants. The other half received employment but were never in the medical field prior to their BSN degree. So, I think its well worth it, for the price and time, you cant beat it. My wife and I are soon to be WGU BSN students! Good luck and I know you will get what you are looking for!

Sometimes I forget this isn't Facebook and become upset when I can't "like" someone's post. Haha. Just want to congratulate you and your wife on your accomplishments! It's awesome you went for your degrees together!

You can still "like" posts here. :) It's right next to the "reply" and "quote" buttons.

Hmm, not on my phone app then...:)

I too was leary on the program, but then I started talking to some new grads and the 5 I write about are at the hospital I work at. I then started to get pumped and felt confident about their program. I cant wait, 2 more semesters then I will be making the phone call. Cheers!!!

What an inspiration!!! Thanks for sharing!!! I wish you and your wife the best of luck in graduating from !!!!

I work at a highly ranked Children's Hospital and is one of their recommended schools through our Education Portal. It has both regional and national accreditation, so it seems like that would speak for itself. I am also interested in and researching WGU.

HappyBee, sorry to see you got a rude reply. I thought it was a good question, thank you for asking. Some people still don't get it. I have considered taking the BSN through an CSU but picked instead for many reasons, I heard the negative comments about WGU from nurse mangers and fellow nurses. I came to the conclusion that these nurses simply aren't educated about WGU. I did a clinical rotation at PIH, and almost every nurse I came across said they are completing or will complete their BSN with WGU. I'm looking to start BSN-RN May 1st. Good luck with your choosing. 

Thank you! I appreciate your response.

That is very true! They are not educated about . WGU is fully accredited so what is so negative about it? I hope to apply soon! Good luck with your future endeavors!

I graduated with my MSN- education at just last June 17. Currently in the job search arena and this has been quite interesting due to the fact in hind sight should have went for the leadership track , yet most nurses are leaders and we all educate at every level. IF you like working independently it is great and less expensive then my BSN was that is for sure, Now I believe my next adventure will be a clinical nurse specialist.
