WV BON recognize excelsior grads???

by sconoli

I am wondering if the WV RN board honor RN degrees from excelsior?? I am contemplating what to do b/c i was attending fairmont state to apply to their RN program but I was offered a position at the VA nursing home in clarksburg and am taking it. I still want to get my RN but really can't quit working to do it. I'm upset about putting off my education, I'm actually wondering if i'll ever get my RN, i'm beginning to think not. I'm beginning to think I should just give up on my dream of getting my RN. I need advice on whether to use a traditional college like fairmont and take a class at a time or do it online through excelsior?? Is anyone here a WV RN that got their degree from excelsior?? ANy advice is greatly appreciated.

Sconoli,
Is it the nursing home? That is a state job right? I work next door @ the medical center. Anyway... don't give up hope too soon. Things will fall together and you will be able to attend college and get your RN. Consider your age. I was 40 when I became an RN. I was an LPN for four years which was good experience for me. The schools aren't going anywhere and your patience will pay off in the future. It will happen for you! I would guess that the BON does recognize any accredited program. My nurse manager got his MSN from Phoenix online. It will work out you will see. Just go to work and keep researching.

Thanks for the advice edchunt, yes, it is the nursing home and it is a state job. It's FT and i really couldn't turn it down. I'm just trying to figure out what to do about my RN. I really want to progress and better things for my family so i feel bad about not getting it right away. but bills need paid and things happen so i'm hoping it all works out.

Sconoli,
You will see how it will pan out. I have been there. So you definitely have the job? As I said I will be right next door to you. I went to school with LPNs older than myself (40). One was 50 and another 46 or 47. Just sit back and watch how it all comes together. You are a hard worker , no doubt because you are an LPN. You passed your boards even though your child was ill around that time and in the hospital. The schools will be there waiting for you to conquer them when the time is ripe for you. Some LPN experience is very helpful (my opinion) , some of the best nurse I have worked with are experienced LPNs. You will be able to learn a lot while working. I was working for the state at the time I went to school ( Sharpe Hospital). The state will help you, in some cases with your schooling. Whether it be working around your school schedule or even financially. So get in there and check into it. A couple years can't kill you. You'll be making money with some of the better benes around. I just applied to Fairmont myself to get my BSN, I have had to wait awhile but it will be worth the wait in the end. Keep investigating ways to help yourself and you will see it all become clear and you will find yourself studying for RN classes sooner than you think. Keep your head up and good luck to you.

They were accepting it a year ago, because i did it that way. I suppose they still are.
Read my posts re: EC from a year ago--you will probably be discouraged. But you may have a much easier time of it with your LPN experience. It was definitely the cheapest and i did it on my own schedule while working FT--so it has some pluses.

Yes, I do know at one time WV BON accepted this program. I worked with 2 nurses who did it, one went on to get a job at the VA in Beckley. Ed is giving you some good advice about being patient, getting a little more experience, and maybe geeting some of the pressure off in the personal life before committing to school. I wish you the best of luck, if you just have a little patience and faith I am sure it will turn out well in the end. Blessings to you and your family.
