can't find nclex stats for WV

by Agatha

Hello West Virginians!!

I'm down here in Dixie, but my heart is always in the mountain state!!

I'm trying to find a list of approved nursing schools in WV and the NCLEX pass rate of their students.

I've been to the state Board of Nursing site several times to no avail.

Any ideas where they're hiding it?

Since I haven't completely made up my mind where to enroll, I wanted to at least look over WV info.

Thanks so much!

When I wanted to know the NCLEX pass rate of my school (in New York) as a measure of how solid the preparation was, I contacted the state Board of Education. They sent me about 5 lbs of paper, which was the last five years of data on the pass rates, not just of my school, but of all the NY schools of nursing, AND the pass rates of the other 49 states (those weren't broken down by school, though).

Short answer: contact the WV Board of Ed.

As to NLN accredited schools, contact the NLN and they should be able to point you to (or send you) a list.

Good luck!

Default At Mountain State University
OK, I don't know if this will help you, but I am attending Mountain State University in Beckley. Today was my first A & P class and my instructor told us that MSU has the highest pass rate on boards than of any other schools in the state. He was however refering to the health sciences dept, in whole. Now I am just starting out in the program, but it seems really good. Here is a link to their website if you would like to check the schol out. You may try emailing them to see who could give you exact figures for MSU. http://www.mountainstate.edu/
They also offer a MSN as well.

Nurse Thanks & more questions if you have time.
Chris -- thank you, and I wrote to the BON in WV right away. If they don't come through, I'll try the BOE. TX is the other place I'm looking (lived there for years). UT-Austin has a BS-to-MSN program w/100% NCLEX pass rate, just not sure how to swing the Austin cost of living.

Jennifer -- thanks for the tip on MSU. I'm in the midst of writing them for more info. Do you know anything about their BA/BS to BSN program? This is what's in their catalog:

Students complete 12 to 16 hours a semester with two evenings a week in the classroom and complete 8 to 16 hours of clinical studies on the weekend. Semesters are 16 weeks long (excluding holiday breaks), with a one-semester break between each semester. After 18 months of study credit is awarded for the following courses: (list of 76 credit hours)
18 months of study and 16 weeks per semester = 4 semester with 14 weeks remaining, so I'm assuming 4 semesters. Maybe I'm reading it wrong, but is there truly a "one-semester break" between semesters? Maybe they meant to say "week" or "month."

Do you know if they mean nursing students only go two evenings a week plus the clinicals on the weekend in this program?

<sigh> sounds too good to be true, almost as if there might be time to hold down a job to pay for it all. Yay! But back to reality, I can't see having time to roll over much less work, if I'm completing 76 hours in 18 months.

Thanks again to both of you for your help!

Default Not sure
I am not really sure about that particular program. The paper catalog that I have says a 1 semester break as well. I am just getting started and I really have not had the chance to become familiar with all that they have to offer.

From what I understand they have a good nursing program but the tution is a little steep. Right now, nursing tution is $285. Per credit hour. I am not sure if their are any other fees associated with the pathways program.

Sorry that I could not be of more help, but feel fre to ask me any questions. I will certainly try to help if I can.

yes, their tuition is steep for a small West Virginia school that's relatively new!! Guess it used to be Beckley College. Funny, my uncle went there for a degree back in the late '80s.

Did your cost of $285 per hour includes all the fees? From the online catalog:
In addition to University tuition, deposits, and fees, students enrolling in the School of Health Sciences must pay clinical, laboratory, program, and special fees ....
I'm worried there's more, but then again, the tuition fee schedule seemed to be scaled for the different programs, so maybe that's it.

Also, do you know yet how much the liability insurance is? What about other supplies?

Also, it specifically states the BS/BA-BSN pathway is
structured to fit around full-time employment.
Of the prerequisites, I only lack micro and nutrition. Yay!! I'm so happy! Now, if only their statistics for passing the NCLEX are good for this program!!

My son, his wife, and their new baby live in Logan. And my daughter is in her last year at Marshall.

Gosh, I've mowed you down w/questions ... sorry ... Please don't go to any trouble. I've already written to them. I'm just so excited to find a school where it won't be impossible to work. Thanks so much for mentioning your school!!

Default Good Pass Rate
Agatha.
I can't give you any particulars on the pass rate of Mountain State but I do know personally it has a very good pass rate and it is a well established program. Some of the instructors have been there for quite a long time, working to make this program and the students really good nurses. I have worked with many of them and they get the job done.
Yes, the tuition rate is a little steep but not too bad, check out some of the other schools, not here so much, but other states you mentioned. The cost of living is a little better here too. You mentioned Logan, there is a school there, Southern I think, it has a good pass rate too.
I do know several people who checked on programs other places and decided to stay here. Less money, good pass rates, good clinical rotations. Just a heads up from someone who has spent time with nurses from every school here abouts.

I went to the Randolph County Votech School of Practical Nursing. The course cost $4000.00. There were a few item, (within a couple hundred dollars) that wasn't covered under the tuition, and the wvnclex was one not covered. The school's past pass rate has been 100%. The instructors are great, and make sure that their students get pushed into the "lime light" and get to perform proceedures. Try them, it may just be for you. :hatparty:
