UW ABSN 2015

U.S.A. Washington

Published

Hello you all!

I'm from Seattle, and I am applying to the University of Washington to be part of the 2015 cohort for their ABSN program. I wanted to know if there was anyone else here on the same journey. Yes?

I'm applying to a few other ABSN programs around the country, too:

Duke University

Johns Hopkins University

Oregon Health and Science University

New York University

MGHIP

MCPHS University

University of Rochester

University of Massachusetts - Amherst

Emory University

I know admission to UW and the other accelerated nursing programs are pretty competitive, and I hope to give myself a shot of getting in somewhere by increasing the places to which I apply. The schools I'd really love to attend most are OHSU, Johns Hopkins and MGH.

My undergraduate GPA is 3.91, and my nursing prerequisites GPA is 3.95. I only have A&P II and Microbiology remaining, which I'll do this fall semester, in three weeks. I'm volunteering at a Cancer Clinic, which I do one day a week, and I just started a full-time job at a hospital on Pill Hill a few weeks ago. I'm pretty nervous about embarking on a new chapter.

Any other folks out there? What other schools beside UW are you applying to? Have you completed your letter of motivation?

Let's hear from each other!

Hi, I just joined allnurses and have been accepted to the ABSN program. I'm looking forward to start, but feel that there is very little information on what we should be doing to prepare before we start in June. I read through all the information that was sent by the department, but I'm worried if we are suppose to be filling out the FAFSA now or looking out for scholarships that have early deadlines. Does anyone have any information on what to do in preparation for the financial aspect? I thought about contacting the adviser soon, but was hoping to see if there was some other personal experience or advice.

Has anyone heard from UW admission yet? Was there any case that people who got accepted by the school of nursing were rejected by UW before? I hope submitting a separate application is just administrational process :(

Hey born2bns,

I am submitting my application on Friday (i.e., 02-13-2015). I am a bit peeved that we have to submit another form of writing after that very detailed ABSN application, including the proctored essay portion. I'm really nervous that I will somehow be denied by UW for Postbac admissions for whatever reason, and thats really scary after coming this far.

Has anyone heard of someone being accepted into the ABSN program, but denied to UW as a Postbac student?

I don't think so. I've been emailing with one of the advisors and they told me that they send in the list of accepted ABSN students. Pretty much, you won't get denied to UW as a postbac student. Cheers!

I submitted the post-bacc application within a week of getting the spot, just so I knew that it was done. I went in and physically spoke to one of the advisors about the application, and how frustrating it was to need to do this secondary application. They couldn't directly say "by being accepted to the ABSN program, you will be guaranteed admission to UW," but they said everything around that point. Things like "The ABSN application is much more intensive and specific." or "We usually follow the recommendations for acceptance provided by each school's own admissions."

The only way that one wouldn't get admitted is if they didn't have all the coursework done that is needed to satisfy a UW undergrad degree. Which surprised me a little when I found out I needed two terms of foreign language. I didn't have any in college, but they said that there would be no problem since I had taken several terms in high school.

It really seems that as long as you were accepted by the School of Nursing, they will do whatever they can to ensure that you are able to be a nursing student.

But still, extra stress! Hooray!

As for the post by tyang, some of those points have been made before when scouring the allnurses forums to determine what school I wanted to attend. Perhaps it won't be the number one ABSN program in the country. But, the UW name would still go a long way when seeking advanced degrees, or highly selective job positions. The communication is pretty difficult, and I expect that it will remain that way. They are a really large school, and the UW Top Nursing School rating comes from their graduate programs, which is where administration likely focuses it's energy. I have been unable to find any informations supporting the stated rumor that this is the final ABSN enrollment period; all I can say is: Thank goodness I made it in before it ends!

What are people's plans for post graduation? Continuing on to more advanced practices? Certifications? What kinds of fields are people looking into/excited about working in?

Does anyone want to start a Facebook group for UW 2015 ABSN?

Will anyone be attending UW as an out-of-state student from Cali?

I was wondering how you guys will go on about moving, finding apartments and such.

Hello, sparkyy,

I am from California and have been looking for rooms from craigslist, but it doesn't seem to be many rooms available at this time. I also looked at the UW off campus housing website Off-Campus Housing Affairs but unfortunately we do not have access to the listings. It is frustrating and ridiculous that postbacc result will come out during May for the programs starting in June. How do they expect the out of state students to find housing only a month before the school starts? If I understand right, we also have some requirements to complete like immunizations and HIPPA by April 20th or so.

Anyway, sparkyy, assuming I will be accepted by UW postbacc, I have a plan to visit Seattle some time in late March of early April to find my room hoping to be able to move in early June.

Regarding the student IDs, I spoke with the advisor on the phone and they told me that they start sending out all of the login information mid-March. So anyone coming as an out-of-state student can look at the off-campus housing site that UW has with the student netID around that time.

Hey! I just received an email with the invitation to create the student netID, which I then did. It gave me access to myUW, but nothing else. I suppose that they will continue to expand the items which we will have access to as time goes on.

For the folks coming from out of state, basically, the admissions for UW said that if you are accepted to the nursing program, you will be admitted. So I think it would be safe to plan accordingly. I chose to not go to a different school because I am planning on going to the UW program.

Regarding a Facebook group, that would be cool! Has anyone yet? I looked before and didn't see anything for UW nursing besides their main group page. None of the cohorts have any that I have seen. It would be pretty easy to start one if no one else has! Let me know.

Yeah, same here! I went ahead and created my netID.

For out-of-state people (or in-state people too), have you guys tried using the off-campus housing website by UW?

I'm not quite sure how to use that website.

& ZrowGz I think it's safe for you to make one since no one has yet :)

Hello, ZrowGz

A couple days ago, I contacted both PCE and the UW SON advisor, and they said NetID or PAC will be given some time this month. Did you just receive it today? Was it from PCE or the SON? I have not received mine yet. Can I ask you when you submitted postbacc application?

and it would be nice if you can create a Facebook group page for us! :)
