University of Washington BSN Fall 2012

U.S.A. Washington

Published

I'm surprised that this year I haven't seen any threads about people applying to UW's program. What's going on? Where are all the 2012 hopefuls? Reveal yourselves ;)

Good luck to everyone!

So how did everyone feel after that.... Not too bad huh?? The conversions were simple enough....

What scenario did you pick, and why?

I picked C because I have plenty of experience with A & B. I approached it from the standpoint that I wanted to face a new challenge that this patient offered.

What about those odds, not too mad 96 out of 305... If everyone was there that is...

What about those odds, 96 out of 305, not too bad... If everyone that they stated was there or turned in from out of state...

Good Luck everyone

I chose scenario A. I did not have a whole lot of experience with either of the scenarios, so I picked the one I had the most experiences with so that I can be able to help that patient. I want to go into mental health and I am really passionate about helping patients with dementia etc., so thought it was a great choice to gain some more experience. I am a bit confused as to how they are going to judge those essays or what they wanted to see... One thing for sure is that following direction was one of the only thing I saw that was obvious! Sigh, good luck everyone! I am sure they know what they are doing and confident that they will make the right decisions.Would be great to hear some more feedback, I don't know what to think!

I chose scenario A as well. I work with the elderly and those who suffer from dementia, so I wanted to use my experience to help with what I know and then continue to gain knowledge in the hard areas that I don't deal with very often. I felt really rushed near the end so my final part of the essay was sub par. I wonder as well how much they take this essay into consideration. I know I could have done better on it if I had more time. The math was easy, but I think I took too long double checking my simple math! I hope this is only a piece of the application process! Now that I'm reflecting back on it, I'm disappointed with how my final essay turned out. I guess I have the fact that I followed directions going for me! I'm glad it's over, but the next two months are going to go by so slow! Here's to waiting everyone!

I picked patient A too. I did terrible! I felt like I was rushed and like amynurse68 I spent too much time rechecking my math portion. I regret doing a rough draft because it took too much time. My essay ended up being under 2 pages and I felt like I repeated myself over and over.

Sigh. The thing that still gives me hope is that there's a new committee and they will review ALL FIVE parts of the application. The essay is just 1/5. But honestly I think I blew it....

Good luck on the wait everyone, I'm sure it'll go by fast.

I don't think it's out of 305? She said there were 230 in the room and 30 doing off-campus essays... were did you get the other number? 96/260 sounds a lot better than 96/305! But I guess they're both better than 96/475.

Also what are the "special directions" you (amynurse68 and PP) are talking about? Did I blow that too? Oh dear...

I'm confused too about the special directions, I remember her saying something in the beginning but when reading I didn't find anything out of the ordinary. Really hope I did not miss anything.

The special directions was do not write on the back of the page and you were only allowed 2 pages for the essay! I heard people talking as I left, hardly anyone thought they did well on that essay! You only had an hour and you wrote what came to your mind and made sense at that moment! Don't feel bad! Did anyone think they did really well? I am just OKAY still LOL

I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt like they repeated themselves a little bit. My last paragraph, granted it should sound like a conclusion, was literally a repeat of everything I already said! I really regret not having enough time to finish a rough draft. Heck, I didn't really have a rough draft. By the time I started my draft, we only 45 min left, so I figured I better just write! You're right about the numbers, I think it's somewhere between 260-270 applicants were invited to the proctored essay and there are 96 seats. She specifically said 230-240 were in the auditorium and 30 more were out of the area. Plus, it sounds like there weren't any that were automatically admitted. I remember at the last info session, they mentioned they rarely select someone automatically now.

The only special instructions I saw was to write on the front page only, name on every page, and show your work on the math part. So not really "special," but enough that if I didn't read it, I might have written on the back of the page.

Let's hope other people didn't read those directions because I thought they were pretty basic :p I can't believe she allowed people to attach an extra page to show work. I showed my work on the green sheet, that would've cut down the competition to at least half, judging by how everyone reacted when she said "if you didn't show your work...". It was very explicitly stated in the directions!! LOL.

Am I the only one that finds the UW questions a little difficult to answer? They seem so... vague and repetitive... It happened to me when I did my personal statement and the person who wrote my letter of rec complained of that too. We tried to come up with ideas and kept thinking "isn't this basically the same question as before? how do we touch on all these points and stay under 20 pgs?" haha.

I couldn't agree with you more YoungIdealist! Without blatantly posting the question on here I feel I could have answered 2 and 3 the same! I also had a difficult time not sounding repeatitive in my personal statement because the questions were so vague and similar.

Yeah, the directions were straightforward, and she mentioned them before we started. Sometimes I have too much adrenaline to even focus on directions, so yeah, I'm glad I paid attention :)

Wow that was fun, I must have missed the directions of not writing on the back... Good thing I didn't. I was reading the lines thoroughly as well...
