How's the job outlook for new grads?

U.S.A. Washington

Hey all. I live in Oregon and am having a hard time finding job here especially when there is hardly any new grads program available. What's worst is that no one is retiring, which makes it hard for new grads to get into the hospital. Anyone know if Washington is a new grad friendly state? I would love your inputs because I don't wanna move out of the northwest. Any suggestions on where to apply? Thank you :)

I didn't go to school in the NW but just moved up here. Got a job in a residency program after 4 months of applying. I know MultiCare, Franciscan Health System, Harrison Medical Center and UW hire new grads. Harrison uses the Versant Residency program which is supposed to be good. I'm sure there are more. Virginia Mason and Providence likely hire new grads. When searching for MultiCare jobs you need to type "residency" into the job search filter as they only hire new grads into these residency positions. They post maybe 1 or 2 in various specialties each month. Very hit and miss. Harrison hires twice a year. Good luck!

By the way, Oregon is great. Down here now kiting the coast for the first time...beautiful!

Hey welcome to the northwest!! :) you're gonna love it here. Thank you for the information. I will look into those hospitals. I am just hopeful to find something here. By the way, did you apply regular RN positions or just residency programs in general? And also, did you had your WA license first before u applied? Thanks :D

Hello. Sorry to say but Washington is not a new grad friendly state especially the Spokane area. None of the hospitals around here new grads or nurses without experience. They include Sacred Heart, Holy Family, Valley and Deaconess. You would have a better chance at the hospitals on the western side of Washington. There are a lot of home care agencies who will hire new grads but the pay is very low and they will work you 7 days a week if you let them.

Good luck. If you find a place that hires new grads and old new grads besides homecare let me know.

It's been a tough job market here for new grads! I just did a refresher clinical with eight new grads who've been unemployed for two years and needed to do a clinical to get current experience. The only people in my program who have hospital jobs are those who worked for the hospital as nurse techs or CNAs during school. Some of us have found non-hospital jobs (home health, LTC, etc.)

Since there are 20+ nursing programs in Western Washington alone, there is a lot of competition for new grad jobs.

Wow thank you all for your inputs. I will try to stay away from Eastern side of Washington then. Fyi Oregon has around 5 new grads program available. Legacy had like 500+ applicants last year for only a few spots. Talk about competition here. This is a lot worse than Washington but not as worse than California for sure. I just really hope there are jobs out there for new grads. It is ridiculous to pay for endorsement fees. :uhoh3:

Hi Seattle rain. Can you explain what a clinical refresher course is? Is that the same thing as shadowing a nurse? How much is the course? Thanks

Franciscan is grad friendly. They have a huge residency program. I think they run it twice a year though, not sure on that. Franciscan in general is very heavy in education.

Good luck. I hope you find something soon!
