Hey -- anyone else applying to GU Fall of 2013? :)

Just got home, and I'm so excited to hear the good news for everyone! I'm going to RSVP for the 5th and 6th, and then have my birthday party on the 7th! Wheee!

Ersoch, if you take a look at that ABSN application checklist PDF, there's a link to the financial aid information you need to submit. One is the FAFSA, and the other is an form that starts with a "C"... The latter has to be mailed to College Board, so check things out right away. The priority deadline was March 1.

I have found that application checklist and all of the required financial aid already, but I have hesitated to fill it out because I am about to get married and I wanted to fill out my FAFSA after that. However, I notice that there is a CSS requirement too, and I don't know how the CSS changes with my marital status. It's mostly parental information. Do I still need to provide that? Does it influence my aid eligibility? Does anyone have any experience with this?

A changing marital status makes financial aid very confusing.

Ersoch, I found the FAFSA to be pretty straightforward, not as complicated as it used to be. A great part in it is a chance to explain your situation in a "Comments" section. The FAFSA is based on last year's tax return, so getting married soon would likely not factor into the application anyway. The key is if you resided with your parents and/or if they or anyone else could claim you as a dependent. Then, their income would apply. But, you can say that you are marrying soon in that "Comments" section, thus potentially cutting off living with your parents or not having the potential to get financial support. I'm certainly not a financial aid specialist, I'm going by what I saw. GT financial aid does provide a phone number, so I encourage you to call right away. They continually stress not to delay the financial aid application; if you wait, you may not have access to as much money. Congrats on your upcoming wedding, by the way!

They especially stress not to delay that CSS application because that has to be mailed. It is required. Remember, everything is based on last year's tax return, according to what I saw when I filled it out. Also, there's this weird component in which you need to electronically transfer your 2012 income tax income information directly into the FAFSA. Otherwise, you have to provide a certified copy of your federal tax return. It's just a click of a button, but be sure not to skip that step.

Thanks, ProfessorT! I know for sure that the FAFSA is based on marital status on the date that the FAFSA is filed (not on the tax returns), which is why I have postponed filing: you are not considered "independent" on the FAFSA until you are married or 24 years of age, even if you don't life with your parents. You do have to include your information from last years tax returns, but they also calculate EFC (expected family contribution) assuming your parents will give you money, which mine won't. The comments section changes nothing. (Believe me -- I have been through this).

However, I'm not sure about the CSS and how that is influenced by changing marital status. I'm going to call today about it.

I've now called Georgetown. Once I'm married, the CSS and FAFSA will require my spouse's information (no parental information). For this reason, they told me to go ahead and wait until I'm married (next week). I don't know if anyone else is in a similar position, but I thought I'd post this just in case!

Eroch, I'm so glad you called! I totally missed that because I'm so darned old that I probably overlooked it. See, this is why I'm not a financial aid advisor! Ha. It's good you got that straightened out. Sounds like you're marrying really soon! Wouldn't it be nice to get accepted right before the big day? :-)

Haha, you are much too nice. My fiance and I were just talking yesterday about how ridiculously confusing FA is. There are so many laws and variables, and they're always changing, and always different for every school. So don't worry -- I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with your age.

And yes! It would be great to be accepted right before the big day. Although I wouldn't complain if it happened even sooner, haha. ;)

And no, I haven't heard any confirmation for the WHC scholarship. I didn't get any response when I emailed my essay in, either. Did anyone else?
