Georgetown Accelerated BSN hopefuls -- fall 2013

U.S.A. Washington DC

Published

Hey -- anyone else applying to GU Fall of 2013? :)

Great advice! Also, I highly recommend that future interviewees look at the Washington Medical Center's website, particularly the nursing employment section. They list specializations and values that they hold. Although they don't tour these areas (for obvious reasons), they have the only burn unit in the area, and they also have an oncology unit. I'm more interested in those departments because of the continuity of care. If you desire that, don't hesitate to ask questions during your interview.

They also have former students chat with you. One particularly made an impression on me because she had gotten the scholarship with no previous medical experience. This demonstrates a key value they expressed to us: "If you have made it this far, we know you can do the work." And, indeed, applicants are highly capable, intelligent, passionate people. Georgetown and WHC are looking for people who are a good fit. Trust their judgment and listen carefully to what they tell you before you make an employment commitment. This is a high-acuity hospital for complex adult care. If you receive the WHC scholarship, you would actually have a five-year commitment because you would do your clinicals there.

I totally agree with Erloch that this is the moment when a spark should ignite in you. The faculty is awesome, and the hospital is awesome. There will be 4-5 faculty there, and you will have an interview with one of them. (They choose how that goes.) Be yourself, show the love you have for the profession, and you will know what to say because it will come from your heart.

Good luck, Everyone! I pray your interviews go well!

I meant Ersoch! Erloch sounds like a creature one would find in the ocean! Ha. And yes, I would LOVE to be in the same cohort as you!!! Do come back here and let me know what news you get, and I will do the same. I will likely wait for both decisions before I post, unless I'm rejected altogether. I won't be able to attend Georgetown if I don't get the scholarship. I'm glad they make the decisions quickly after that last weekend. It's tough to wait!

Thank you, Professor T! It was so nice to meet you along with everyone else who was at the information session and hospital. I completely agree with everything that you and Ersoch have said. To be completely honest, before attending this weekend I thought I had my mind made up about where I was going, and I was kind of hoping to hate the program and the hospital so that it would make my decision easier if I was accepted. Of course it was the complete opposite. I absolutely LOVED the program, the hospital, and like you both said, I fell in love with the program directors as well. I am so nervous now about the decisions and wishing I had interviewed with a later group so that I wouldn't have to wait as long! Haha! Again, it was nice (and a little intimidating) to meet you all and hear your impressive stories! Good luck to you all!! ;)

Hello all!

Do any of you know any good housing options in GT? I was originally planning on attending duke because they had a very alluring and appealing tuition reimbursement program and because I wanted to do a peds program, the WHC is not such a good fit for me. Anyhow, the DUKE tuition reimbursement program was canceled indefinitely a couple of days ago and now I am really hoping on getting into GT since it is closer to family for me! anyone who anywhere good to look into to live for young graduate students in their early twenties?

Ahhh, I know what you mean about being glad we only have one week! I can already tell that I will be madly checking my email every 30 seconds between now and when we are notified, even though I know we won't hear back until next week.

I will definitely let everyone know, although I will be sad if it's bad news. I don't know if I'll be able to wait until I hear both decisions. I have never had a nail biting habit, but I think it may be time to start...

Most places in Georgetown are going to be really expensive (and not necessarily worth the money, since you'll be traveling for clinicals). I would look at places in Virginia (right across from GT, and GT has a bus). There is also a bus that goes from Dupont Circle to Georgetown, so anywhere along the red line can be pretty convenient.

Hey everyone! I was curious if anyone had the L&D nurse's (Sue),email or know where I can find it? I wanted to ask her a question since I interviewed with her and all her business cards were out by the time I got to grabbing one! Thanks!!

As for housing, just to second and third what everyone has said, Georgetown is expensive (and I would be shocked if you could do it for what they included in the cost of living budget!) I currently live over on Capitol Hill on the Red Line. It is super close to WHC (bus right off of H St. NE to the hospital, lots of restaurants and bars for when you come up from air :) and all the basic necessities like banks, grocery stores, transportation etc). But Columbia Heights is also a cheaper area if you get lucky. As for VA, i wouldnt go much farther than Arlington.

Good luck everyone and it was great meeting you all!!

Wow! I'm so sorry for you regarding Duke! I remember you from the Duke forum. If you can't find anything closer to GT, there is the metro that goes to the Georgetown area and a free Georgetown shuttle from the train station. I live in Vienna. You would be paying commute costs, so you would have to weigh that out with a less expensive rent. But, housing in this area is very costly, nearly double what it is around Duke, so be prepared for that. Fairfax is home to George Mason University, so you could potentially get in with a group of grad students for as low as $400-$600 a month out here.

Hi all,

I hope everyone had a great experience at their visits so far. I absolutely fell in love with the program and the people I met. I left super excited, but even more nervous than before because I will be so devastated if I don't get in! Do you guys know for sure when we will find out? I forgot to ask at my visit!

Good luck, everyone!

They still need to process the applications and interviews from this coming weekend's candidates, so I presume we'll have an answer by the end of next week (the week of 15 April)... or at least I hope because I'm so antsy!

Yep! That is what we were told at the first info session too...sometime during the week of the 15th :)

is there any sort of interview during the campus tour? I am not sure what to expect when I go on Monday & am a little nervous!
