Any Info on Children's National?

Hi, I just found out in the last couple weeks that my boyfriend is moving to DC in the fall. We have not decided yet if we will try to keep up a long distance relationship or if I am going with him. In the event I were to end up going, I was hoping some of you wonderful DC'ers could give me some info on Children's National. What would my chances be of getting a job there? By the time he'd be moving I would have just finished my BSN and would have 1 year peds experience at a children's hospital (experience primarily in adolescent medicine). I would prefer to stay in pediatrics. Also, I've heard a rumor that Children's National gives out sign on bonuses, anyone know if this is true? If it is, that would be awesome, as I would be breaking a contract to go to DC.

Edit: forgot to add, I also have some peds homecare experience. Don't know if that would matter in an interview or not.

The new grad situation in this area is not very good. I went to the open house at children's a while back and they don't have many jobs available. I didn't hear anything about a sign on bonus, although that would be great. I think the problem is that most of the hospitals, including children's (last i heard), have their budgets frozen and can't hire many new employees. Combined with the high number of new graduates in this area (catholice, GMU, NOVA, marymount, georgetown, to name a few), it is going to be hard to get a job. most of my classmates and myself have had little success so far. i don't know the situation for experienced nurses, but new grads are having trouble. i wish i had better news to report

Lynn, I'm currentally in Pittsburgh and many of our new grads are finding similar problems in trying to get a job. However, since I do have experience, I'm hoping that would help me get my foot in the door.

I guess this is not a local issue then. Hopefully the experience will help you get a job- good luck!

I actually just got hired on children's national in their cardiac icu as a new grad- position will not begin till sept. i can tell you there was no sign on bonus- i've heard from other people you have to ask about the sign-on bonus with children's. but, i was just so thankful to get such a position i didn't feel right about asking about a bonus! they do have other new grad positions open- i just think they're few and far between... hope this helps.
