Well we are already getting refugees here in Dallas and north dallas areas from Katrina victims in our ERs in the area. There are a lot of people who are going to need help. Are your ERs ready.

Now this is a ER thread, dont move it elsewhere

Also, as an African-American, I understand your sentiments. However, I think referring to the survivors of hurricane Katrina as refugees EMPHASIZES how devastating the destruction and loss is. Also, more than African-Americans are affected. It is so horrendous and I think everyone needs to keep being reminded that is an extraordinarily horrific situation.

Yes!!!!!! I am sure Texas hospitals will get alot of our americans through ER, and are neighboring state here in Oklahoma will be here to help also as we are getting some in Muskogee, Okla.

PLEASE! Let stop call these people refugees, they are tax paying american people here in the US, I am very upset to here my people refugees, which they are not. I am a proud african american nurse here in Oklahoma, and it was sad for me to see that the minority people were tried like non-human being here in america. I am glad that they are finally getting assistance even-though it took 6-7 days later, thank god for that. And thank god my relative were able to get out of there before the hurricane broke, as they were attending college there.

I used to work in Muskogee almost a 1/4 of a century ago, nice hospital there.

I dont understand your dislike for the Term Refugee. I dont understand your reference to "tried like nonhuman"

Im glad your family made it out before the Big Blow

Just wanted to add to this. I work at an ER in San Antonio. We also went into external disaster mode, calling in extra staff and having others on call. All employees coming into work were asked to bring in any extra clothing they had; men's, women's, and childrens as well as shoes and blankets. Everyone was wonderful! The ambulance entrance looked like a thrift store but we were able to offer our refugee patients a shower, hot food, and fresh clothing once they were medically cleared. All were very appreciative. We even had some of the shelters contact our ER for some of the clothes because we had so many coming in. There is so much more they will all need but we were happy just to be able to help in some small way. I am proud of the way that all Americans are pitching in to help! Keep up the good work!

At the time of this writing their are at least 300 in the community where they're staying. As the Case Manager in the ED I try and visit everyone of them. They are so appreciative of everything we're doing. I believe it's running really well, few gliches occasionaly, but it helps to know what the plan is!!!!! I personally felt that these new residents to our state had definately been through enough and most certainly didin't want some one not knowing how they would get their follow up etc. I called a couple providers and got them to agree to see the pt.s for follow ups. Spoke with the red cross and they have provided transport for the pt.s back tothe barracks they're staying at. Many though have come to Colorado to live with family and of course the red cross doesn't assist there, so we just give them a cab voucher to return home. It's been really rewarding helping these patients who have been through so much.

PS: I greww up in hurricane land and sat thru many as a kid. I cannot not fathom the devastation and pure terror some of these people went through. We need to help them make everyday a little better.
