UVA RN New Graduate Nurse Residency Program 2013

U.S.A. Virginia

Has anyone applied for the UVA RN New Graduate Nurse Residency Program?

Also, I applied back in December for it. Originally the application was due at the end of January, but now the website states that they extended the deadline to March 1st. Anyone who has applied in past years or this year know when we might be contacted?

I don't work at UVA, but I know many people who do. They post Clinician 1 positions throughout the year and have varying orientation start times (June, July, September, even one in October) if I recall correctly. You do need to have passed NCLEX before you can begin orientation. They don't do "graduate nurses." They hire ADNs. Maybe they're reducing the hires, maybe they're not, but every nurse I personally know who works there is an ADN and was hired when UVA still had magnet. Charlottesville is not a bad place, but it's not exactly a great place for young(ish) people - so they are not, and can't be, nearly as picky about educational credentials as hospitals in large metros.

Thanks for your information. I didn't know that UVA had lost their magnet! And I wasn't aware that UVA doesn't do "graduate nurses". That's funny because they have on their website that they want graduate nurses to apply for their residency. ADNs stand for associate degree nurses? Does Charlottesville not have a lot of young people?

Hmmm I'm not sure what VANurse is talking about as UVA is in the midst of hiring new grads for clinician 1 positions and throughout the year. Positions are a bit tight now due to budget restrictions, but as a teaching hospital, they certainly hire new grads. In an attempt to regain magnet status they are however putting more preference for BSN or higher or they are hiring ADNs with the promise that they will get the BSN within 5 years of hire. Also, Charlottesville certainly has a lot of young people in it: UVA is a university town thus there are a plethora of undergrad, graduate and young professionals...

I am from the Hampton Roads area, but I've been to UVA to visit friends. I was thinking the same thing, in fact, I have a couple of friends that stayed in Charlottesville after graduating.

That's what I said - they hire for clinician 1 positions throughout the year. By "graduate nurse" I mean they do not allow you to orient on the floor with a provisional license. You must be an actual RN before you can start orientation.

I've lived in Charlottesville for 2 years. If you do not have connections to the actual University (not the hospital), it can be difficult to meet people. UVA is a bit of an insular world within Charlottesville. The city itself has only about 43,000 people and that is where the vast majority of the younger people live (that said - I'm in my thirties - so a bit beyond hanging with undergrads and 24-year-old grad students). If you're in your 20s, you may like it more and blend better, but the idea that there's some large cadre of "young professionals" (I hate that term, but I'm using it for clarity) in Cville is laughable to anyone who actually lives here.

Thanks everybody for the replies!! I guess they don't contact people they haven't selected for the interviews :(

I live in Cville and am a UVA graduate and can attest to the difficulty of getting a job at UVA. I have applied for over 50 jobs there (non nursing) and have never even been given an interview. This is part of the reason why I am back in school - I am just starting the process taking my prereqs at PVCC to apply there for the ADN program as well as UVA's Master Entry program.

From what I was told by the Nursing School's Assistant Dean of admissions, UVA does still hire ADN nurses, but it is becoming fewer and fewer. Of the 80 new grad positions hired last year, only 16 were ADNs. My goal is to eventually get a nursing job at UVA down the road as well.
