I have a potential interview at UVA for their new grad residency program on Sept 15th.. Any advice on the new grad residency- or UVA hospital in general would be greatly appreciated.

Hi!

Good luck with your interviews. I have been working at University Hospital since the beginning of summer. Dependant upon the unit, I have had a great orientation period. They are very flexable with the scheduling. At least in my area. The interview back in February was one of the best I had. However, the other places I considered were Carolina Med in Charlotte and VCU. IMO, if you are in search of a blood and guts trauma center, find an inner city area. UVA is great for medical and surgical cases you rarely get to see at other institutions. Staffing is status qou as every other hospital in the United States. I would not say the greatest, nor the worse. The pay is comprable, not great, but not deplorable. If you have any questions, PM me! Best of luck in your pursuits on the journey of nursing.

Best!

I swear I hate the shift differentials. Lol, but my unit isn't flexible with scheduling.

Thanks for all the info. To the people that wanted to know about the interview. My interview is a phone interview Friday as I had a school conflict that I couldn't get out of- so I really can't tell you what to expect until after Friday Morning. My interview is 10:45 est Friday morning

For anyone that hasn't had their interview yet.. I did a phone interview.. They were very nice. They asked a lot of questions.. Most of them you expected.. personal strengths and weaknesses, team work etc.. but a few really threw me off..

ex: when was the last time you broke a rule (a speeding ticket does not count) some just really stumped me..

Good luck!

Hey everyone, I also applied for the RN residency program at UVA. I was wondering how long did it take for them to contact you guys about whether you got the job or not??

This is a super old thread-just realized I had subscribed to it when I was a senior looking at UVA. I took a total of 6 months from the time I put in my application to when I formally signed papers. I had a phone interview about two months from when I submitted my paperwork. My best advice would be to call the HR person you are working with. I think it is hard to get into the system (especially as a new graduate) but once you are in, it is so easy to transfer departments. The past couple of years, they have been waiting for the cnl and fourth year uva students to decide on jobs before offering to other program graduates, so they can delay the process a little (what happened to me). I have been here since graduation (couple of years). There have been a lot of upper management changes, including a CNO and both directors of adult critical & acute care. We just declined our Magnet recertification, so we will no longer be a magnet hospital.

Thankyou Meggiepie24 for your reply! Wow, 6 months?? I went to the RN Residency Open House last month and interviewed in the NICU. I think I will call them tomorrow because it has been 3 weeks. Plus, they told me they would get back to us within 2-3 weeks.

It was a long time looking back! The main hold up was the hr dept trying to figure out where the CNL and 4th years were going to work. It was the first year they had done that and it wasn't very pretty. Every time a student would change their mind they would call me with another department job offer-I went through sicu, ortho/trauma, transplant, colorectal (that I remember). good thing I didn't really have a preference of where I worked! I absolutely love the NICU. They have so many pods and really good MD/NP support. I would just make sure the NICU is where you want to start. I went through orientation (including new grad meetings for 6 months) with some girls who worked there and I think they all quit after a year. Great nurses though. I would also recommend doing some shadowing with a nurse-even for 8 hours. Good luck!

Yeah, even though I love NICU but at this point, I would be happy to work in any unit. Again, thank you!
