Transferring from NOVA to GMU without RN degree

U.S.A. Virginia

I am a student at NOVA currently taking pre-requisite classes for nursing. I realized that instead of getting into nursing school here at NOVA, I would just rather go to GMU and get BSN degree first before working. I would like to finish all the pre-requisites that I need to have in order to successfully transfer over to GMU. However, the GMU website is not so clear and I have no idea which courses I need to complete before applying. If there are nurses or students out there that took pre-requisite classes at NOVA and applied to nursing school in GMU and got accepted, please let me know how you did it and which courses you took.

There are courses that are pretty much straightforward, such as English or Communication, but I have no idea what some of these classes that they require are: Global understanding (GCH 205), Anatomy& Physiology (BIOL 124 & 125), Microbiology (BIOL 246 & 306) and such.

I don't even think Global understanding class is offered at NOVA and at NOVA, there are classes called NAS 161 and 162, which are anatomy&physiology and microbiology combined. I have already taken the NAS class, so I would really hate to take anatomy&physiology and microbiology separately again. Does GMU accept NAS or do you have to take it separately?

I apologize about my question being very, very long. If anyone made it to this far and has actually transferred to GMU like the way I want, please help me out.

Thank you very much for reading!

I'm not certain but any classes that start with NAS are NOT transferable. At least that was the case a few years back when I was doing my pre-reqs for NVCC's program! Thats why i took the longer route in some of my pre reqs, so later on i wouldn't have to do them again!!

I will be attending GMU’s traditional BSN program this fall. I have a bachelor’s degree in an unrelated field but took the remaining prereq classes I needed at NOVA. What I suggest you do is set up a meeting with the school of nursing at GMU to discuss transfer requirements. In addition you might find this website helpful, http://admissions.gmu.edu/TransferGuide/

And as one quick note….Nas 161 and 162 transfer over as A&P and Micro at GMU(so you don't need to retake your science classes)

I was actually at GMU last fall, the A&P class I needed was full and my advisor told me to see if I could get into NVCC's NAS 161 and 162 because these classes do transfer. It was how I found out NVCC has a nursing program. Finance was a major factor for me so I decided on NVCC nursing route. Also NVCC has a higher NCLEX pass rate and I also heard INOVA Hospitals hires 2x as many NVCC graduates over GMU. The link provided by Pmkn10 is very good resurce.

Thank you very much for the replies. The web link helped a lot as well. I am glad to know that NAS transfers over...because I would really hate to take science classes over again! I understand that NAS 161 and 162 transfer as Anatomy & Physiology. Does it transfer as Microbiology also? Or should I take Microbiology separately? The explanation about Microbiology wasn't exactly clear.

I have also heard that hospitals prefer students from NOVA due to more clinical experiences. My mother actually just graduated from NOVA nursing and she was hired by Inova hospital. She told me that the interviewer said "we love students from NOVA! You guys are more experienced!"

Nas 161 and 162 transfer as Micro as well. Basically you take those two classes(161&162) at NOVA and it counts for three at Mason(both a&p and micro). NOVA students might come off as "more experienced" due to the fact that their curriculum contains less core classes than at Mason. Less core classes mean more time for clinical. I also wanted to mention that if you would like to work in certain intensive care units right after graduation, some of them require a bachelors degree, and if you don't have one, you'll have to work to in another department for a year and then see if you can transfer.

I'm glad I was wrong,lol

Various types of courses satisfy the Global Understanding requirement. They might be things like intercultural communication or international relations. A call to the transfer office can give you greater clarification.
