Hello :) THIS IS A BRAND NEW THREAD for TCC's up and coming classes in January and March, 2013.

I am starting this thread to help me get through the waiting game. I just finished my HESI yesterday, and turned in my application today. Now the LONG wait begins. I would like to get into the Jan or Mar cohorts. Does anyone know when they actually begin?

I was surprised to have chemistry on the HESI--because it isn't required for the program. My scores were good though...all within the 92-100 range. It took me FOREVER to do the test. 223 minutes!

How about everyone else? What did you think of the HESI?

hey girls thankx god i went to the school today i'm iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn . so happy and excited after a long wait for the mail to come in , thank you girls for the support and see you all at the orientation day .

Chmicha,

I'm so happy for you!!! I knew you'd get in! Did they tell you what cohort you'll be in? I'm sure you're glad to have an answer! I can only imagine how stressful you must have been this weekend! Congrats again!

I saw your PM after I replied! :) I'd be happy to switch with you, the ONLY issue may be whether or not my mom can get here as soon as January. She'll be moving in with us ( she lives in MS now) to help out with my kids since my hubby is in the Navy and will be deploying sometime next year. I'm going to try to give her a call and see what I can find out and I'll text you when I know something. It SHOULDN'T be an issue, she's suppose to be here for Christmas and just stay with us from then on anyway. But I want to clear everything with her to be completely sure everything will work out.

Hey there everyone--particularly NURSES or already student nurses!

I have some questions that they will probably answer on the 29th, but still, I'm just dying to know...

What is the first class? Nursing 108? Is that the only class we take for the first 8 weeks?

Do we need a stethoscope? what kind if so would you recommend?

Do we need a watch? Can we use digital?

Do we have to wear the white nursing shoes or can we wear something else?

Does the nursing school sign us up for the courses or do we?

Do we get to take Spring break? Any break at all over the summer?

Does anyone want to sell me their nursing 108 book?

Thanks for any information you pass along :)

CONGRATULATIONS EVERYONE! I'M SO VERY EXCITED!!

Hey CHMICHA88---WOW! What a relief! Everyone on this board made it! Congratulations to you :)

I can actually answer some of your questions!

First class is a Basic Nursing class. We'll go over basic concepts, learn about the nursing process, and basic skills such as bed baths, and CNA type skills. In my last school we also learned to give injections and things, but ever program is different. Here is the course discription from TCC's site. Introduces principles of nursing, health and wellness concepts, and the nursing process. Identifies nursing strategies to meet the multidimensional needs of individuals. Includes math computational skills, basic computer instruction related to the delivery of nursing care, introduction to the profession of nursing, nursing process, documentation; basic needs related to integumentary system, teaching/learning, stress, psychosocial, safety, nourishment, elimination, oxygenation, circulation, rest, comfort, sensory, fluid and electrolyte and mobility needs in adult clients. Also includes care of the pre/post operative client. Provides supervised learning experience in college nursing laboratories and/or cooperating agencies.

According to the schedule NUR 108 is only 8wks as are most of the NUR courses. I think I only saw like 3 classes that were 16wks. I think I'll actually prefer the 8wk set up.

I don't know what they want for a stethoscope or if they want us to have one. I was wondering this myself. But I have a Littmann II from my last program and I liked it a lot. I went with it b/c I had seen others on this forum recommend it. (I was a lurker for a looooong time ;))

You need a watch with a second hand to keep track of breathing, and pulse. You could probably do it with a digital watch, but I think it's easier with an analog.

Definitely white shoes but you can wear any that meet their specifications. I actually asked this today when I turned my sheet in. I was told all white, leather, non porous Trust me, you'll be glad when you end up with someone's body fluids on your shoes and you can just hose them off!!!

According to what our packet said they would give us instructions for getting our schedule at the orientation.

According to the schedule if you're starting in 108 in January, that class will end like March 3 and the next class with begin on March 11, when Cohort 4 begins. So yes according to that you will get spring break off. We should still get off days that are "OFF" for the school over all. Unless I've missed something.

I don't have a book for you, but you can get books for really cheap from Amazon. You can rent, borrow, or buy used or new books from them, and for much cheaper than the school offers. And if you register your school email address with Amazon you can get a free Student account that allows you to get a Free Amazon Prime membership. You can't do the free movie downloads, but you do get the free 2 day shipping on any thing that is PRIME eligible. :)

****

And some questions of my own:

Surely they will do drug testing (they did in my last program) so when are we suppose to do that? They didn't give instructions to us in our packet.

When are we suppose to have our malpractice, background and CPR? They'll probably tell us at the Orientation, but I'm impatient, and trying to plan.

And I'm totally excited too! Can't WAIT!!!!

Most of the classes in the beginning are 8 weeks long. Some digital watches have second hand. You sign yourself up for classes. The first class is fundamentals of nursing and you learn about the history, legal aspects, ethics , what nursing is, bed making, baths, communication, nursing process, enemas, foleys and the list goes on ha. The second class is pharmacology and physical assessment which i am in.. and you learn about drugs, passing meds and doing a head to toe assessment. You do need a stethoscope. They don't require a certain brand. I have a Littman but a few classmates have a prestige.
