teas test at NVCC

U.S.A. Virginia

Published

Hi,

I'm new to the website and I posted this in another section but I think I was in the wrong place, hopefully this is the right area for this kind of post.

I am currently finishing my pre-requisites for the nursing program at Northern Virginia Community College, and I will be taking the teas exam in about a month. My school requires that you pass with at least a 78% in each section to apply for the nursing program. We are also only allowed to take the teas test 3 times ever with thirty days between each try, meaning if we don't get a 78% or above on all sections we will never be able to go to nursing school at NVCC. I have read about other programs around Va that use the teas as only a part of their admission process and do not require a certain score in order to apply. I am a bit worried, as I don't know exactly what to expect. I purchased the study manual but I have heard that the manual is not comparable to the actual teas test. I can only take the test once because the program that I hope to get in to starts during the summer (I will not have thirty days to re-test before applying.) If I get less than a 78% on each section I will have to apply for the program that starts in the fall. I'm just wondering if anyone could share their experience with the teas pre-entrance exam, especially the mathematics and science sections. Thanks so much.

I took the TEAS exam back in late 2005 or maybe it was 2006 (started the program Aug 2007) Then they switched to HESI, now back to TEAS. The reading part I thought was simple, so was the math, Science was my weakness and didn't fair that well on that part. I too bought the book, but don't think it really helped that much. It can't hurt to look though. One just has to go in with a positive attitude and keep track of your time. At one time, if you failed just 1 section, you just had to redo that section, but that changed! Best of luck

Most people seem to be worried about the science portion of the teas test. I took the Hesi and don't have to take the Teas so I am not of much help. However, I would recommend going to this site: http://www.nvcc.edu/medical/testing/ and reserving a spot at one of the next Nursing Pre-Admission Test Group Review Sessions.

Both of those are linked!

And then go from there. If you need to supplement your teas study guide with some sort of science study guide, I would recommend that as well.

Good luck!

Yes excellent advice by FururenovaRN!! Forgot all about that option!! Do look into it soon, as I belive they only allow so many people per session, and they are free. Nice job!!

I only learned from the best :bowingpur HAHA, no seriously, you give the best advice ever!

Hi

I am so excited to have found this posting. I am also taking the tease at NVCC next month. I only have a few weeks to prepare and I know what you are going through. I talked to the people in the testing center and I do not think that it looks that good for us.

I bought the study manual but it does not cover much on Science.

If you would like to chat please post here.

I am currently taking 162 and all I have left is the tease.

I asked my teacher if she knew of anyone who has taken it recently and she was going to ask some other studens in her other classes.

Hope we both make it.

:)

Thanks.

It's nice to know that I'm not going through this alone! I am also taking 162 (the eight week option) to finish by the deadline for the accelerated program. Are you applying for the accelerated or traditional? I will probably take advantage of the "teas study group" if I can, I never knew about it until I heard about it on here. I also want to take the online pre-test but I'm not sure if I should take it now or when I am a little more prepared (in a few weeks). Nova is so strict about this teas test that it doesn't leave room for someone who is a so-so tester or who is having an off day. I hope we make it too!

Hi again,

I am taking the 16 week course at the Annandale Campus and hope to get into the Fall program for nursing.

I do not know if I will pass the tease, I might have to go the LPN way and then try to get into the program.

I ordered the book secrets of the teas exam and hope it will be more helpful then the tsi study guide.

Good Luck!

I am also looking for some kind of help in trying to pass the tease test. The book really intimidates me. I am so afraid I wont pass. It seem like I am getting all the answers wrong when studing with the book. Help.

Hi Mytaty

I took the Teas yesterday and passed it, juhuu, I never thought I had a chance since English is my third language.

I was getting many questions wrong when taking sample tests, so please do not get discouraged!

Just try to relax while taking the test and do the best you can.

:wink2:

rulab,

can you tell me just how bad you thought the test was? and how was it an average for the whole test or average over all ,or each subject counted as a percentage?

Thanks

Terri

I found the test very hard and I was shocked that I passed. As I was taking it I kept thinking that I bombed it.

But I have been out of school for 20 years, so maybe you won't find it as hard.

Our school looks at your individual score, and then calculate the overall score.

I believe I had a 93 % in Reading, 88% in math, 80% in Science, and a 83% in English, overall 86%.
