relocating to VA (Richmond)- need opinion on workplaces

Hello all,

I am relocating to Richmond, Virginia from Pennsylvania. I am looking to work in a hospital setting. I would greatly appreciate any opinions on the city hospitals in Richmond. Anything - good experiences, bad, best paying, public vs private hospitals. I am very open to any of them. I have especially been looking at VCU, riverside hopitals, Bon Secours. I would probably prefer a public hospital and a larger setting. Thanks so much.

MCV (VCU) Is a wonderful place to work. it is a teaching hospital so you do have tons of residents, but you definately get alot of experience. they are the trauma center pretty much as well! also, any bon secours hospital is awesome as well! I am not too sure about the pay at these places but I know that any of these hospitals ( St. Mary's, St. Francis, VCU, Chippenham, Chippenham-Johnston-willis, and henrico doctor's are great!) You will do just fine! I love richmond and you will love it too!!! Good Luc! Also, I guess it depends on what part of richmond you are moving too, to be able to see which hospital is closest to you. they also have the sitter barefoot va hospital there as well! Good Luck!!!

I just relocated to VA, but from IL. I just started the process to obtain a VA license. Did you do this already? Or are you a part of the "compact" states? If not, did you get your VA license yet? I ask this because it looks like you can do it all online...which is strange to me. I paid the fee, but feel like I should have done more...

MCV is great!! I worked there (doing transplant nursing) back in 2003 before moving. I had checked around to all the hospitals around and MCV paid the best. In fact they paid great. They used to have a WIP program (weekend incentive pay) which was nice. Don't know if they still have it. But I would have to say that is a great hospital and is nice to always have a doc around when you need them, rather than calling them and catching attitude in the middle of the night!

I transferrd to VA with a LA license which is not a compact state. It was simple and didn't take very long at all. I did it all online!! Good Luck. You could always cal the BON if you need to!

Did you have to fill out the part that needed to be notarized?

MCV is a great hospital to work at! Lots of interaction with all different kinds of patients, and it is a very popular hospital. Today actually, is the first time i've heard about Bon Secours, but it sounds like a very friendly hospital.

I would highly recommend MCV it is, to me, the best hospital in Richmond.

Does anyone know the going rate in Richmond....I've got about 4 1/2 years of experience. I'm thinking of returning to the east coast and richmond is on my list of places I'd consider.....any advice?

I don't know the rate for your level of experience, but as a new grad at VCU I was getting paid $21 an hour plus shift differentials.

VCU is great! My husband works there in a management position at one of the clinics, and I used to work there as an RN. I only left because I needed part-time and my boss refused to give it to me. It is a really good place to work though, so much opportunity to learn. The only drawback is that the place is a TOTAL maze. I think it would take at least a year to figure out all the ins and outs of the buildings. Which doesn't matter, so long as you can figure out how to get to your unit. :)
