NVCC - Potential applicant - How competitive is it?

U.S.A. Virginia

Hello everyone!

I am currently an RN (new grad; started last month after graduating in May) working for one of the Inovas, but my boyfriend is also looking to return to school to become an RN. He'd like to continue working part-time and is hoping to attend NVCC, where he has taken a majority of his prerequisites.

Currently, he is a medical assistant, and has a bachelors in Nuclear Medicine. He was also an EMT for several years back home in New York. However, his GPA is barely above a 3, and I know it's terribly competitive (having done it myself just months ago).

How difficult is it to get into the community colleges? He'd plan on doing a bridging program to get his bachelors eventually, but what are his chances? I went to a private school, and I know in NY there was a wait list, even for the community colleges, but I don't know how it works here.

Thank you so much!

Depends on # of applicants. They only look at prereqs for GPA. Last year they didn't have as many applicants as slots so they admitted everyone who had a qualified application. I heard they did the same this year, but that was just through the rumor mill so I don't know if it is accurate. Might I suggest he look at Mason's prior bachelor's program too? I don't know how competitive that one is, I only knew one person applying to is this past year and she got in.

THANK YOU!

That is great to hear, because his prerequisite GPA is a 3.5+, which will obviously be a huge help.

I know Mason is ridiculously competitive, but definitely an option... so, thank you! He has also taken a majority of his prereqs at NOVA, so that might be helpful for him (maybe) as well... I am also hoping that being a male will help his chances

Thank you for your insight, I really appreciate it!
