NVCC Class of 2013 Meet and Greet + Q&A

Hello All,

I wanted to start a new thread for everyone who was accepted (and because the other one was getting really long). :) If you could please share some information about yourself and any questions you have about the program, that'd be great!

Years at NVCC: 1

Track: Traditional

Career Goal: CRNA (Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist)

Planning to Transfer: Yes (Mason, BSN Program)

Classes Completed: SDV 101, BIO 141, 142, 205, CHM 111, CST 229, ITE 115, HLT 141 + AP Credit in BIO, ENG, and PSY.

About me: I know I've always wanted to work in healthcare but when I started volunteering as an EMT, I knew that I wanted to be a nurse. My senior year I applied to UVa and was not accepted and decided to go to NVCC because they have a well spoken about nursing program, and I could work to make money while I was at school. I plan to earn my RN through NVCC, then transfer to Mason and earn my BSN. I'm excited and overwhelmed but I have great confidence that our class will make it through together!

Questions:

- Is anyone else dreading buying the NUR 111 book? It's 520 dollars....

- Does anyone living near campus need a roommate/also looking to move closer to Springfield for the year? The drive for me is 70+ minutes.

- Do we need to buy our own scrubs? Any limitations on colors/prints/style? What color do our shoes have to be?

Career Goal: I'm really interested in cardiac/thoracic ICU, which I'd like to do for a few years before becoming a CRNA

Planning to Transfer: Yes. Will apply to VCU as soon as I get my RN.

Classes Completed: Had AP Bio and Eng in HS (which they took), I have a previous AS in Business, and I have all the prereqs and coreqs out of the way (except for pharm and intercultural communication, which I'm in now)

About me: I'm 31, have 3 kids, and have been married for almost 10 years. I must look a lot younger, because people seem to think I'm my kid's nanny as opposed to their mom, LOL. My kids will be 8, 5, and 3 when the program starts, so it's going to be a challenge balancing school and family. My husband used to be an officer in the Marine Corps, so we've lived in Hawaii for 3 years, Georgia for 2, and now we're back in NoVA (where we both went to HS). I'm not really sure when I decided I wanted to be a nurse, but I love helping people, and it seemed like a career I could do anywhere (my husband is now with the State Dept and we may potentially go overseas later). Anyway, I'm excited to get started and can't wait to meet everyone!

Questions:

1) Does anyone know if the INOVA BLS course is acceptable for our CPR class? I really want to do it at Loudoun Hospital (I live like 2 miles away) but it makes me nervous that it's shorter and doesn't really mention infant CPR in the description. Did anyone email Mrs. Vito and get confirmation?

2) Is anyone planning on getting a nicer stethoscope? I don't want to have to keep "upgrading" and spend more money over the long run if I know I want to do something in cardiology. Is there any chance they won't let us use the nicer ones in clinicals?

3) Is anyone completely dreading the fact that we HAVE to buy our uniforms through the bookstore? There are no exceptions to this because the pants all have to be from the same "dye lot", etc. I really need a tall size, and they don't even offer it. Oh well. I guess I'll just have to hope for the best. I'm wondering how I'm supposed to inspire confidence in my abilities when I'll look like I can't even dress myself, LOL.

They also offer nurse kits on Scrubs and Beyond.com. I am ordering my steth separately and they have one w/o a steth for 15 dollars, the one with the steth is 30 dollars. Look under Shoes/Scopes then under Medical Kits and Tools. If you're like me I'm trying to save money every where I go... lol

Yes INOVA is acceptable and we did infant cpr, child cpr, adult cpr, defribiliation and aed, choking, advanced airway. :) It's the same book for the bls because as long as it is AHA! I'm 5 7 I hope they aren't too short. :no:

I must say there is just SO much to do! Blah blah blahhh

Hey everyone! It's nice to see that alot of you are on the roll trying to get everything taken care of! I am trying too.. just seems like there's sooo much to do! lol.

Anyways, does anybody know how much it will cost to take the CPR class through the medical campus? and how do I register? they don't seem to wanna answer their phones. On another note, I live in quantico/stafford area...anyone know of another place I can take the CPR class other than MEC which is also acceptable?

One more thing..this may be a rather stupid question...but i read the info on BB regarding the name tags, but i'm getting two different info. under name tag ordering options, it says it has to be 3/4 of an inch high and under uniform ordering instructions, it says 1 inch high. which is right???

Yay! Then I guess I'll sign up now! I'm thrilled it's less expensive and shorter than MEC's!

I'm 5'9, so I usually need a 33.5 inch inseam. Maybe they have more sizes if I actually go in to the bookstore. We'll see!;)

just another student - if you go to heart.org you should be able to search for any cpr courses close to your location. Just make sure you pick the right course

I am currently a stay at home mom of three children ages 14, 7 and 3. I've been married to my husband for 8 years. We moved to Virginia in 2006. Becoming a nurse was something I always wanted to do. Everyone sounds very determined and focused. I can't wait to meet everyone at orientation.

For anyone who might not have a copy of their immunization records, I was able to get a copy of mine from my high school.

thanks again for the info about the INOVA BLS class.

I finally dropped the class that I registered from MEC and register from INOVA instead.

How long is the class?

was it hard?

Did the INOVA send you the material? (books,etc)

They sent me a confirmation email and under the confirmation,there is this information:

If you register for a class less than 1 week (5 business days) prior to its start, your mailed materials may not reach you before your class. Loaner books are available to use during the class. If you prefer to receive a book prior to class, please register for a class at a later date. Exception: Infant CPR classes and Family & Friends books are distributed in class.

the class is $120, plus the book costs around $17 at amazon but i think it's available at barnes for $15. registration is online.

click H for Healthcare Provider, BLS/CPR and then that redirects you to the registration and payment page. I was having problems registering online yesterday bec they don't accept all credit cards, but VISA should be fine.

it's more expensive than what INOVA offers.

nat, CPR should be the easiest class we take as nurses... just pay attention and you'll do fine. :)

They didn't send mine because I didn't register 5 days before but if you do they will. But if you want me to be 100% i didn't even open the book. They taught me everything I need to know, at a slow pace, and I felt extremely prepared because they were such good teachers! I've never taken CPR before and by the end of the class she stated that i learned it the quickest since it was so new. You will be fine :)
