George Mason Accelerated BSN - Fall 2013 Applicants

U.S.A. Virginia

Published

Hi all! New member here.

Since the only threads I see about GMU are from previous admissions cycles, I thought I'd start a new one for Fall 2013. The deadline just past... so who applied for this cycle?

April can't get here fast enough... let the waiting begin!

I agree! April can't get here fast enough! I'm feeling confident about my application, but am still nervous. I have already been accepted to Shenandoah's 2nd degree and that is my back up. GMU is my first choice b/c it's shorter, cheaper, and closer!

Congrats on being accepted to Shenandoah! I'm applying there as well (they have my application; I just need to send in my recommendation letters and transcripts...kinda procrastinating a bit :shy:). How long did it take them to get back to you once your application was complete?

I'm applying to one other school as well since I want to have options, but GMU is definitely my first choice as well...for all the reasons you mentioned. I like the idea of being able to walk to campus on the days classes are in Fairfax. :)

Good luck from a current GMU student. :) I remember being in your position last winter. The waiting is brutal!

Thanks! How's everything going so far? Do you like the program, and is it as intense as they say it is?

I really hope I get in... they really focused on just how competitive the application process is during the info session. Are there really over 300 applicants for 50 slots?? :wideyed:

There are 48 spots (although we have 47 people b/c one dropped out the first week). I don't know how many applicants there were, but it was a lot. Despite what they make you believe, not everyone admitted has a 4.0 in their prereqs.

Yes, the program is intense, but not impossible. There are a few people who work part-time, but I'm not sure how they manage. Good time management is key. I have kids, but luckily my husband is super supportive so that I can get enough study time. The spring semester just started and it's looking even busier than the fall. This semester we have clinical twice a week (T/R). Class M/W from 11:30-1:15 and two classes on Friday 10:30-4:15. Lab is either M or W at 7:30. Right now Lab is the ONLY thing on Fairfax campus. All our classes are in Manassas, which means that this semester we have to drive from one campus to the other on the same day.

I'm not going to lie, the program has it's problems. Organization is NOT their strong suit. Expect information to come last minute and then to change after that. It's frustrating but you just have to roll with it. There are good and bad professors and clinical instructors. Overall I'm still happy. I'm sure there would be problems no matter where you go and finishing in one year will be fantastic. I can't wait for August!

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thank you for the info sKris! The schedule is the biggest worry of mine right now. I have kids too, it's very frustrating not being able to know what childcare I will need. I've heard the same complaint about disorganization and clinical sites changing at the last minute about Shenandoah. Also, I had a friend who went to Xray school and I remember her not finding out about clinicals until the last minute too! I think it's just (unfortunately) the norm. There are a TON of things that have to be set up to get 50 people into a clinical site. I wouldn't want to do it!!

Selisa - Shenandoah set up the prospective students page on SU.edu right away but they haven't updated it since! I applied around the end of November and I received my verbal acceptance the middle of January. At that time they were still waiting for my transcripts from Fall semester. To be completely honest though, (and sorry for the brag!) I scored in the 99%tile on the TEAS so I think my acceptance was kind of a no-brainer :) What's the third program you're applying to?

I can't wait until April. I am so nervous about this. I have the grades, but I've heard GMU puts lots of emphasis on the essay; I write well, but have no idea if my essay will stand out of hundreds or if I answered questions properly.

sKris..I've heard from previous graduates that they are not organized. How are the clinicals? Do you get any say on locations and preferences? How far in advance do you know where you will be placed?

Clinicals are largely what you make of them. Of course some instructors are better than otters, but you need to put in the effort to get the best experience. We don't get much say at all right now, although we did get to put in choices for the summer community health rotation. We knew the days for clinical awhile back, but I think this semester we found out our placement the week before. It definitely complicates child care having so little notice.

I'm also applying to Marymount University. I was hoping to get everything before the first review date (Feb 15), but I don't think I can get my recommendation letters in before the cut-off; I plan to complete everything and submit before the end of the month.

I did, however, take the TEAS yesterday at Marymount... and I ended up in the same percentile rank as you (99%)! So I'm pretty happy about that, and I hope that it puts me in a good position for both that school and Shenandoah. I just need those letters of rec....

Oh that's phenomenal about your TEAS score! The admissions lady at Shenandoah said she had never seen a score so high - she's going to get her socks blown off when she sees another one! You're in for sure.
