Anyone waiting for acceptance in NVCC nursing fall 2010?

Just was wondering if anyone else is in the same boat as I am in applying for the FALL 2010 nursing at nvcc. Did anyone received their acceptance letter yet? thanks

I just had orientation and they sure do seem oriented towards teaching you the rules! I am trying to decide whether to buy my books at the NVCC book store or online, like at Amazon. I know online is way cheaper, but they said that the book store has pass codes include that you will need, but not get online. Anybody have any experiences or suggestions? Thanks.

Summer03.... I didn't get that feeling at my orientation. Which session did you attend? I just felt like they were rushing through trying to get it over with. I was a little disappointed because I flew back for the day from my vacation for the orientation. Did you decide where you are going to get your books from? I think I am going to go with the bookstore just to make it easier. There is so much to get done that I'm thinking I am going to go the easy route. Have you priced them to see what the difference is?

I graduated in May 2009, and I bought very few of my books at the school bookstore! MUch much cheaper at half.com or other book sites! One just has to make sure there isn't a "code" required

That is exactly what they said, that there is a passcode and you only get it through the bookstore. I have no idea what code they are talking about and what happens if you don't have it. Anybody have any insights?

If it were me---I would email the 1st yr secretary and ask her! She is very nice. I'm sure her email must be on some of ur paperwork!!

For us, the only "codes" that i can recal is for the HESI tests u take each semester (may be something else now) and I think the lab book required something! I know I saved big $$$$$ from buying elsewhere

Flames, thanks for the ideas. Christer, I was in the morning orientation. They were nice, but there definitely is a NOVA way and they seemed to want to be sure we follow it.

I was in the last orientation. You must have caught them when they were fresh! I think they just wanted to go home. I was out of there over an hour earlier than the scheduled finish time. I agree they were very nice though. I was a little surprised at how nice they were. My sister is in a similar RN program in FL and she said at her orientation they were very intimidating and stressed on how many people would not finish the program and how many people were waiting for their seats. I'm glad they weren't like that at NOVA and I love how organized they are. Can't wait for classes to start!

NVCC is fairly organized, lol but their will be times when you question that! lol And yes a fair # of people will fail or drop out, especially the first semester. Not a hard course,if one studies! Don't leave studying to the last minute.

Flames, Thanks again for being a resource for us! Can I ask you a couple more questions?

--Did you have to take HESI every semester? I have seen some programs on allnurses require a minimum score each semester to move on, and some require a minimum score to graduate despite class performance. Do you know what NVCC requires?

--What recommended texts did you get besides NCLEX review books? THe bookstore has about 10 listed ranging from study guides to Davis Lab Results, etc. was wondering what you found useful.

--How do you feel having an ADN degree vs BSN? Do you think it is any issue at all?

thanks!

I was in the second orientation :)

And as far as the codes they put the fear of god of me. I think the book rep spoke longer than anyone else as we all had tons of questions about the books (all of us trying to figure out a way around the required package). I NEVER buy straight from the bookstore, EVER, but am considering it this time. I am thinking I might just suck it up and buy them all via the campus bookstore because it seems there is a lot of electronic content we are going to need for simulations, lab, etc. as well as test prep. I don't want to buy blind, or hassle with getting the wrong codes (and having to re buy) or buying everything piecemeal. I'm stressed enough over finding the right bookbag :) Plus, we won't have a complete list of what we need until we get our syllabus and I believe we have to come to NUR 111 with some reading completed. I don't want to start the first day behind.

My understanding is we are buying almost all of our nursing books this semester (someone said 95% of the books), and that is the only thing that is making me feel a little better in the face of sticker shock.

And I'm beyond excited for the first day of classes, too. (Though a bit overwhelmed with everything that needs to be done, and everything we need to buy and the life changes coming up). I am trying to figure out how to get organized now so I am not overwhelmed. I had CPR on campus today and spoke briefly to a wiped out looking first semester nursing student who expressed complete exhaustion, lots of stress, and difficulty getting all the reading done (gulp).

I think we had a HESI exam every semester except the very 1st--and I think we actually had two during the last semester! For us (may have changed now) it didn't really matter what u scored on them. They did give you bonus points if u scored high. Honestly i never studied for them, my goal was to get in and out in as little time as i could, lol My avg was high enough that I didnt care, lol But for some it saved their butt! The very final HESI, like an exit exam---one had to score so high--if not, you had to take it again, but if your score stil sucked, it didn't matter! They didnt hold you back or anything, just out of $$$ to buy another code. In other words, don't loose sleep over the HESI exams--unless they have changed things. It will be listed in your Syllabus, on how they are graded.

Extra books! No real reason to go buy that many. I mainly used the Saunders NCLEX book! I bought the reviews & rationale series books too, they are great, but mainly just looked at the NCLEX book

I have a job,lol so my ADN worked out well! I have no loans to pay off, a co-worker of mine graduated from Marymount a few yrs back and will be paying her loans off till 2022!

Kmpp444... I am also thinking I am going to buy my first round of books from the bookstore. I'm not sure which ones have codes and I don't have much time to spend looking around for books right now. There is so much to get done and I am working full time, taking two classes and have a 4 month old baby. I'd love to save $, but right now time and simplicity are more important to me. I did take a photography class a few semesters ago and bought my book online as I normally do. I found out when the class started that I needed a code. I just had to go to the publishers website and buy the code. It was simple, but I did end up spending a few more dollars doing it that way than if I had bought the book on campus.
