Anyone attending Shenandoah Accelerated BSN?

U.S.A. Virginia

Hi everyone,

I'm new here. I just finished my pre-req's at NVCC and I was accepted to GMU and Shenandoah's Accelerated BSN programs but I am planning on attending Shenandoah. I like the class curriculum better and I live in Leesburg so it is much closer to my home.

Anywho...I would love to find other students who are going to be in (or are already enrolled) the nursing program at Shenandoah. So if you are please let me know....it would be great to meet some people before classes start and to get a heads up on what the program is like.

Thanks,

Jessica

Thanks gkvegan. I do volunteer at Fairoaks. I have seen Shenandoah students in the clinical rotations. OK, while I got you here. One more questions: What do you hear about finding jobs and gettng hired after school? Thanks a lot

One of the professors told me that all of the people from last semester have jobs and many of them got offers before they finished. From what I have heard second degree students get hired before first degree students.

I'll be at Fair Oaks this summer. If you see any of us you should say hi.

There are a good number of moms in the program. I am not sure how they do it but they are all doing great.

Thank you so much for you answers. I'm a good student that is used to a lot of work, but I'm afraid I won't be able to memorize everything for the tests. I'm renting a room in a townhouse about 5 min. away so the commute won't be bad at all. Do the students have study groups to help each other out? Where do you do clinicals at?

I am good student that is not good at memorizing as well. Pharm is a lot of memorization. But you don't have to memorize every drug. You need to memorize classes and know their suffixes. For example beta blocker end in -olol. For a lot of the material it's more about understanding the process. For example if you know how a beta blocker works you can figure out the side effects. If you know what left sided heart falure does you can figure out what symptoms to look for. Even though there is a decent amount of memorization, knowing the processes can help you work through most question even if you haven't memorized the answer.

Yes people have study groups. Our clinicals are at Loudoun, Reston, Fairfax, Fair Oaks, Prince William, and Winchester. I am not sure where the community clinicals are yet. You get to choose where you go after the first semester.

Didn't know about the jobs; good to know that finding jobs isn't too difficult. I used short term memory for pharm, and actually for lots of the other courses, which makes me feel that I am not truly learning at times. With the pace of the program, I barely have enough time to study ahead, as well as have my own personal time. Hopefully with the upcoming clinicals it will all stick in. Good luck to everyone and don't stress too much. Enjoy your free time and don't worry about studying ahead of time, just focus once your program actually starts.

Hi everyone,

I was so excited to find this thread. I have recently been accepted to both Shendandoah and GWU for Fall 2011, and I am leaning towards Shenandoah because it's cheaper. I am glad to hear that you are all having good experiences there, its so reassuring to me.

Hi FlowerFlour,

I am glad to hear that you are leaning towards Shenandoah. I made the same decision. I have been asking around the hospital that I volunteer, all the nurses that I talked to agreed that it does not matter what school you go, at the end you have to take the same exam- NCLEX. Once you pass that exam, you are an RN. I don't want to pay student loans for years. Also, I like Shenandoah's clinical sites. I am deferring my start date to spring semester. I need a little breathing room after finishing my bachelors this semester. Overall, I am pretty happy with my choice.

Hey guys, I am starting Shenandoah's program in the fall of 2011.

Flowerflour-are you starting at the same time?

Does anyone going to Shenandoah need a roommate or know someone who does? I'm moving to NOVA for the program and I don't know anyone to live with! I am 27/f and went to WVU for undergrad.

Flowerflour and carleyrose- I am also attending the SU program starting in Fall 2011.

I thought it would be nice to know some people who are also starting at the same time before going into the program. My email is [email protected], please feel free to get in touch. I'm nervous yet excited about starting this program.

Hey carlyrose and shipstu,

Looks like we'll be classmates! I've sent in my deposit so I am definitely starting at SU in the fall. Are both of you attending at the Leesburg campus? I thought about joining the new cohort in Winchester; I'll be living about halfway between the two cities. But, it seems like the ASD students in Winchester would be grouped into classes with regular nursing undergrads, and I like the idea of taking classes with just other ASD students (like in Leesburg).

carly, I don't know of anyone who needs a roommate but if I hear anything I'll be sure to let you know!

I can't wait to start the program. I finished my undergrad in December '09 and have been itching to start nursing school since then.
