Advice for 2014 UVA hopeful!!

U.S.A. Virginia

Hi everyone!

I was hoping I could get a little advice about UVA's CNL program. This looks like an excellent program and I will be applying for a May 2014 start date (deadline is Oct 1). I'm basically putting all my eggs in one basket with this one, but I have fallen in love with the school and the program! ;)

Here are my current stats:

- Graduating Magna Cum Laude from Liberty University (May 2013) with a BS in Healthcare Management. (3.7 GPA)

- I have volunteered at the local hospital both at the information desk and as a patient representative in the emergency department. The info desk was 1 day per week, and the ED was 1 day every other week--would have liked every week for that one, but demand was high for this position. My volunteer experience is not as extensive as I'd like, especially since I've had to take time off for my CNA class, but I plan on resuming it upon completion.

- I'm currently in the last week of a CNA program, where it seems very likely I will be nominated class valedictorian (I was surprised they even practiced that, but it is what it is I guess :)).

- I satisfy all pre-req requirements except for A&P 1&2, which I intend to complete over the summer.

- Once I pass state boards for my CNA licensure, I plan on getting a limbo job mostly for clinical experience while I work my regular job (mostly to save money for school since I have a husband and a young son as well).

I guess what I'd like to know is what anyone's experience has been like with UVA, what their stats were like, and what the interview is like (from what I understand, its just a short phone interview, but I'd like to know what typically gets asked, etc).

I'd appreciate any insight anyone has on the subject!!

I'm in too! :] exciiiiiiiited. I cannot find the link on facebook either :[

Hm.. I'm worried I won't be able to individually message you all and I think we aren't supposed to post direct links, right?

So... another way to find it is to go to facebook(.com) / groups / 1443440959204638

Or search for this: UVA CNL CLass of 2016

got it ! request sent! Thanks a bunch :]

Hey Everyone,

Congratulations! I was also accepted to the CNL program :) Clay Hysell directed me to this thread so I could get acquainted with you all, maybe talk to some folks who don't have spouses and kids about possibly sharing a house in Charlottesville. Could someone add me to the Facebook group, please? My name's JoJo Jensen.

Thanks a bunch, looking forward to this adventure!

Hey everyone! Happy to have finally found this thread! Congratulations, everyone on getting in (this was the best Christmas gift I've ever gotten). I'm super excited about UVA and getting to know everyone beforehand on this thread and on the Facebook group (just sent in a request to be added a little while ago). I'm from California, and I've actually never been to VA before, so I'm really looking forward to starting this adventure and being in a new part of the country. Where is everyone living right now? I was thinking I would go visit Charlottesville at some point before the start of classes to get to know the town, find housing, etc., but right now I really have no idea where to start (the campus, the neighborhoods...). I would definitely be down to get a house with some classmates, though, so if anyone is in town now or is planning on going on a house-hunting trip during a certain time, let me know! I'll post this comment into the Facebook group as well once I am able to join - my name there is Aubrey.

See you all soon!!

Hey Aubrey!! I live in C'ville now...its wonderful! I have a condo with my husband but if you plan to come visit I would be happy to help you out! I have a spare room if you want to save on hotel costs for your visit. I currently work for the community mental health agency and know the good and bad areas of town. Feel free to ask me any questions and let me know if I can help in any way! I look forward to meeting you!!

Hey Buckeyecass08, I am not sure how to message you privately but, I saw you currently lived in Charlottesville and I wanted to get some advice on neighborhoods, etc. I am starting UVA's FNP program next fall and thought I might get some insight from you. If you know how to pm me, go for it and I can give you a better email address to contact if needed. Thanks!

Here's some free advice on housing for incoming students. The best place to live for nursing students would be the JPA neighborhood (Jefferson Park Ave.) If you can snag an apartment on Monroe or Brandon Ave's you will literally be a block away from classes, but any of the houses or apartments on or off JPA would be great cause the UVA bus runs every ten minutes to take you to the hospital/nursing school. Yes, this is a student area filled with undergrads, but it is less rowdy than the 14th St/Rugby Rd side of town.

Being able to walk or bus to the hospital will be ideal since you have to pay to park at the hospital and is not cheap. Check Charlottesville Apartments - Blue Ridge Apartment Council and University of Virginia | off-Grounds Housing Search for some listings on apartments. That is by no means the only place to look. There are quite a few large property management companies that also have tons of properties (MSC, Wade, Veliky, Godfrey to name a few) You will find a WIDE range of prices out there as well, but good deals can be found if you dig.

I never paid more than 300 month to live within walking distance of class (sharing a house/apartment with other single people, but having my own room always). Mind you, this was nearly 15 years ago as an undergrad. But the last apartment I had before buying a home was a 2 BR for 380 that I lived in by myself and I moved out of there in 04. Don't be thrown off by the high prices of the brand new apartment buildings. You can find an affordable place nearby if you try.

Students do not park at the hospital. Student and commuter parking is at the JPJ Arena/University Hall ($18/month) with a free shuttle bus from 6am- midnight to the School and Health System. Keep in mind that classes in the academic year meet only 2 days/week (Thursdays and Fridays). The summer schedule is more irregular (5 days/week in some weeks, no class meetings in weeks when you are doing your practica).

This is great to know! A couple questions though-- how much parking is in the commuter lot? During the Fall/Spring semesters is there enough parking or is it a "fight" to get a spot? How do you go about receiving a parking permit for the commuter lot?

So im pretty sure that you can go to the UVA website and get the commuter permit. Permit Parking, Parking & Transportation, U.Va.

Hi everyone!

Is anyone else on the wait list? I just received an email saying that they were probably not going to be accepting anyone from the wait list this year. Apparently 15 people were on it with a cohort of only 36! I'm thinking that might be a bit excessive and dragging my hope dry considering they didn't accept anyone from the wait last year, either... I sure am glad that I applied to other schools!

Congratulations to everyone that got in!
