Low GPA and interested the accelerated BSN program..Need advice plz

Hi everyone,

I'm new here. I am completing my Bachelors degree in Business from VCU in December and I am interested in the second degree Accelerated BSN programs. I am in the Northern Va area and I'm looking for schools in the area. My big problem is my GPA. By the time I graduate it will be a 2.36 and I know that is really low to get into a nursing program.. But I plan on taking my prerequisite classes at NOVA to try to bring up my GPA. Does anyone have any advice on any Nursing schools that I should apply to that might accept me???? or advice on any other paths I can take?? I'm really confused and need any help that I can get.

Thanks,
Sasha

The higher your GPA the better. No school is going to accept a student in an accelerated program with a low GPA. Because if a student does not pass the NCLEX exam, the school program would look bad and the state would shut down the program if there are students not passing the NCLEX. Take all the prerequistes prior to entering the nursing program. That would be an opportunity to bring up the GPA. I think some schools drop courses that have low grades like Ds and Fs during the transfer into a new school. That may also help to increase the GPA. Hope this helped.

Once you finish, work hard on your pre-req's. Figure out how to study and make lots of time to do so. I went to VSU and had a 3.1 but I swear I'm working a lot hard on the pre-req's for NVCC's nursing program. Have you thought about doing NVCC's nursing program?

It takes a year to do the pre-req's and then there's a one year and two year program. Your pre-req gpa counts more than your past gpa, but it does factor in. Well on the website it says that having a previous degree factors in. But lots of ppl in the programs at NVCC have previous degrees.

So that could be an option for you as well.

Thank u guys...this info is very useful. I was really unmotivated my sophomore yr in college and messed up my GPA. Marissa, I am also thinking about nvcc and I will apply there just to see what happens. Hopefully they accept me. The only thing is that I already took most of the pre-reqs needed for the nursing program. I will call nvcc tomorrow and ask them some more questions.

I would go to the Medical Education campus, and have your transcript evaluated. If you have an official copy on hand. Or you can print the form off the website and send it in along with your transcript or about the time VCU sends your transcript to NVCC. Some of my past credits transfered and counted/will count toward the pre-reqs and part of the curriculum. So that saves you time and money. Depending on which program you choose.

Here is the link to the program information.

I have a quick question regarding the accelerated nursing program. I have my Bachelor's degree in Political Science from the University of Michigan and had a 3.425 overall gpa. I have taken all of my pre-requisite courses for nursing and have all A's and one C+ in developmental psych. My gpa for pre-reqs is around a 3.9. I am a male and I was wondering what anyone on here thought of my chances are of getting accepted into a program? I have applied to 5 different schools and I am crossing my fingers.

Your stats sound great, I know the accelerated program is a bit tougher to get into. Just apply to the school and have your transcript evaluated so that it's in the system. Talk with a counselor at MEC as well, take the pre-nursing exam and apply before the March deadline.

If youre willing to relocate there is a school in Oklahoma that accepts EVERYONE as long as they meet the requirements. Its called Oklahoma City University (http://www.okcu.edu). They have some type of agreement with the government to decrease the nursing shortage. They have BSN, ABSN, MSN, and doctoral programs. They only turn people away for the doctoral programs. Of course its pricier than community colleges but if youre really discouraged then you should give it a try. I looked at their ABSN program and its around $43,000. Im in the same boat youre in. I have a 3.37 and thats not good enough to get me into any schools in MI, so Ive been applying to schools in Ohio and Indiana instead. If I dont get accepted into any of those programs then Oklahoma will be my LAST resort. But when you want something bad enough you have to do whatever it takes to get it. If I do have to end up going there the only thing I wouldnt like is the lack of diversity I hear the state has especially since Im black and in MI we have people of all the colors of the rainbow here...
