Hiring freeze in NOVA and DC?

by mingez
Updated Feb 12, 2009 at 07:33 PM by mingez

Hello all, my friend who works for INOVA in and around the DC area has told me that there's a hiring freeze within the INOVA system, due to the failing economy.

Problem is, I was planning on moving in about 2-3 months to the area, and I'm a new grad. This has me freaked as everyone tells me that INOVA is a good microcosm of the job market from Reston to Baltimore. Are things that dire?

And, if so, how does this affect the internships out there? I don't want to have to struggle when I get out there.

I'm a student doing clinical at a Inova facility and was told by employees that yes there is a hiring freeze on at Inova! Not in all departments, and that is as far as I have inquired!

Depending on how far outside NOVA you're willing to travel, the WVUH-East health system is hiring, and supposedly hiring new grads. Includes facilities in Martinsburg, WV and Charles Town, WV. I just got a postcard in the mail from them a couple of days ago.

That's cool. For those who don't know the area, you could live in the outer VA suburbs (e.g. Ashburn or Leesburg) and commute to work in WVA. Once you worked there a year or two, you'd have the experience to get hired at a metro DC/MD/VA hospital.

FYI, I'm a volunteer at Washington Hospital Center in DC (starting nursing school in January 2010), and they now only hire BSN's. Their existing ADN/RN staff is being encouraged to go back to school with financial aid from WHC to upgrade themselves to a BSN.

It's funny -- when I finished my ASN last year and jumped right into a BSN program, everyone asked if I was doing the BSN so I could go into management. Nope, I'm doing it just because I want to, and because having 3 associates degrees is a little ridiculous to me. But now? No one asks me about management! I've seen a lot of job postings that express a preference for BSN-prepared RNs. It's becoming a baseline, it seems.

LunahRN, I think you're right about a BSN becoming a baseline at some hospitals. I don't know anyone in my BSN program who's taking that route because they want to go into management. Most seem to either think it's a baseline, or they want to go on to NP, CRNA, Nurse Midwife, or Nurse Educator.
