Anyone apply to GMU Fall 2009?

Hello -

I'm relatively new to the site and have found it helpful reading other's posts on certain things I, too, have been wondering as I pursue a career in nursing.

I am just about finished with all my nursing pre-reqs and have applied to various nursing programs in the NoVa/DC met area. Basically hoping to get accepted into a program this Fall, preferable an absn as I already have a bachelors in Biology.

Just wanted to get a feel if anyone else is in the same boat...'the waiting to hear from any school to accept me' one. In particular, anyone planning (hoping) to go to GMU? I've heard mixed reviews about the program and wanted to get some more direct feedback, both from those applying to GMU and students currently attending there in one of their nursing programs.

Best of Luck to everyone who is working toward this career path!

Hi vb2vthokie, I applied to both of their programs, amongst others in the area. I don't know if you have had much communication with GMU, but I have to say I was VERY unimpressed with everyone I've met, and have been made to feel like nothing but a number by every employee at the school in the nursing department that I've spoken with! I have not been struck with the same passion for nursing there that I have been when I have contacted and spoken with others who have gone through their school's respective nursing programs (specifically, Marymount, Georgetown, UMd), and to me, that says a lot! I haven't heard back from GMU yet, but I've gotten into two of the four I've applied to already, and have an interview at the other, so we'll see what happens. Good luck though if this is really where you'd like to go - they certainly make it sound like their admissions are stringent!

I'm not sure who the previous poster spoke to but if you are accepted into the program I'm sure you'll find the teachers to be very helpful. I'll be a senior in 7 weeks (yay!) and I would say almost all of the nursing professors at Mason are extremely helpful and I have learned a lot so far. You wont hear back from them until mid June so hang in there. If you have any specific questions feel free to ask me( about both the traditional and accelerated programs)...if you look hard enough you'll find problems with any school you apply to. I've very pleased with my decision to attend Mason.

Hello pmkm10 -

Many thanks for your reply. I truly appreciate it.
Now that it's spring, I've gotten news back from all the other schools I've applied to...GREAT news...but alas...I am still awaiting a response from GMU (and I know you said that I shouldn't expect to hear anything earlier than mid-June).

I am writing to you for some academic/professional advice, as you have already been accepted into the program and a soon-to-be senior (CONGRATS!!!). GMU is my first choice for many reasons...but as I have been accepted to all the other schools I've applied to already...the acceptance deadlines for those are coming up soon and I will need to give them a decision...yay or nay (I've already inquired about possible extensions, but due to the high volume of applicants and those on the waiting list - they want to get as many confirmed acceptances as soon as possible). With that said, I now find myself in a mess. I'm afraid that if I decline the acceptance offers from those other schools...solely because I have to wait until June for GMU (and possibly - but hopefully not - declined)...I may be stuck with no options in the end. That's a pretty pessimistic outlook...but I need to be realistic before making any concrete decisions. I'm confident enough to say that I think I'm a strong applicant and my chances of getting accepted into GMU are comparable to many others...but...the decision process could really go either way. I've tried to reach out to a few individuals at GMU...but I haven't had any luck. Do you have any recommendations on how I can approach this situation? Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Thanks for your time.

What you definitely don't want to do is get stuck in a situation where you put all your eggs in one basket for GMU. I don't know what other schools you applied to and how they run things, but I would say to choose your #1 out of the ones you got into. GMU wants $200 to confirm your spot and if the other schools are like that send your check to which ever school you choose to secure a spot and then wait for GMU's decision. You shouldn't have to pay the tuition until the summer so that's the best I can suggest. Worst case scenario you'll be out $200 or so.

I am a student at GMU myself, and I have to say, I LOVE it. I just started this spring, taking my pre-reqs and it's a great school. I am applying for the fall 2010 program, just because I need to finish a few loose ends before I put my application in.

I am there on campus every Tues and Thurs, and I will be there on weekends as well (and all summer).

I am by their definition a "sophomore" still - although I already have an Associates Degree and abut 80 credits under my belt... but they only transfered in 51 credits from my Florida Community College.

Anyways, I will be happy to talk to you too. The numbers wanting to get in is large, yes... but that should tell you something... I learned that GMU has the largest nursing program in the State of Virginia, and possibly the 10th largest in the country.

Don't give up - I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

I applied for the accelerated BSN program at GMU (I also applied to the traditional program as it only required and extra check-box on the app but I am hoping & praying to get into the accelerated track). I live in north Arlington and so I also considered applying to Marymount, Georgetown, etc, but all of the other accelerated programs in the area were longer and significantly more expensive than GMU. I don't know what to expect at all about getting in, and if I do get in, all I know is that it's a very intensive program. I wish there was more information about how the schedule is set up, when you do clinicals, etc. Any information anyone has would be great! Thanks!!

I did apply GMU Nursing, my pre-reqs GPA is 3.8. I am worried about being accepted by their program. I know that last year's GPA is 3.75. How about this year? Somebody know?

I just found out I got into the accelerated BSN! However, I'm looking for someone who's already been in it to give me an idea of the schedule. Any takers?

I'm also interested in meeting anyone else who gets in. I would guess everyone should be hearing back about now!
