hey guys! i was just curious about which option (a or b) everyone is using for their applications. i chose option a, my sat score. i have a 1540 and i was hoping that would be good enough.:confused:

does anyone know their recent cut off sat/ actscore?

and another thing, are the background/ drug checks part of your application, or do you wait for notification, like other schools?

help!!!!! (please)

i got in with my act score of 25. i had already finished all pre-reqs and all non nursing classes with mostly B's and a few A's. the drug test and background check is part of the application. you'll need to turn in the receipt for those when you turn in your application. if you look at the nursing application papers...it will tell you where you need to go for the drug test and where to get the background check.

I'm afraid that I'm not up-to-date on the new SAT scoring system. When I took the SAT, the max score was still 1600, in which case you would obviously get in (unless you bombed your prereqs). I got a 1380/1600 and I new that I would have gotten in without a problem based on that option.

HOWEVER, San Jac is an extremely competative program, and I'm not sure that my GPA alone would have qualified me. The SAT option is kind of the "backdoor" into the program if I remember correctly. What is/are your prereq GPA/grades in specific prereqs?

I would definitely recommend applying to other programs as well. Remember, San Jac isn't the only way to a nursing degree. Don't forget College of the Mainland (COM), UTMB (BSN- getting more competative), and Houston Baptist (expensive), and of course UT-Downtown, and Texas Women's as well if you're interested in BSN. There's another program too, but I can't recall its name at the moment. Many of my friends did not get accepted to San Jac but are now attending COM (LVN? - Remember you can progress to an RN, even online, later if it's your only option).

Also, if you don't have your CNA yet, get it if you have time!!! It will look great on your app, give you something to talk about in interviews for "experience," and give you a head start on clinicals. It's only a 5 week course, and it's given almost every other month. The course is expensive...but it's worth it, and some scholarships are available. I know it's one of the reasons I got in to UTMB. I think San Jac gives you an extra "point" or something as do many of the other schools. The CNA experience truly is a great way to get your feet wet in nursing, plus, the teachers are fabulous (take Mrs. Stockwell on South!!! - best nurse I've met yet!) :redbeathe

Definitely get your: 1) background check, 2) fingerprinting, 3) drug test, 4) TB test, and 5) immunization record up to date (Hep series takes 6 months and you may also need to have a titer drawn (UTMB)!) done ASAP because things get really stressful during crunch time.

Also, just because they now may make you drug test in advance, my friend entered a couple years ago, and they made her do a drug screen during orientation. So beware if you occasionally partake of the wisdom weed...DON'T.

Eek...before you disregard my advice, I just realized that my "k" in the word "knew" somehow got lost...oops.

thanks toughingitout for all your advice... are you already an rn or in school? how is your job/school? i am actually a cna and i am applying to about 8 schools. i'm applying to both adn and bsn schools. my prereqs were ok. (mostly bs with a few as) and i'm taking a few more classes like pharmacology, etc. i think i'm just in freak out mode because i applied to only 2 bsn schools for fall (didn't realize what competiton meant at the time) and didn't get in. i'm not giving up, but it can be so stressful. (i'm already such a worrywart as it is) but i'm still young (20), no real responsibilities and i am able to relocate out of houston. i will be fine.... i just need to breath. lol!

Hello again htownballerete1,

Lol, I wish I was an RN already! I'm still a student in UTMB's accelerated BSN program (BACC2). Honestly...UTMB right now is completely disorganized; I probably should have gone to UT-Downtown or TWU. Of course, I would still definitely recommend applying to UTMB. As you mentioned, nursing schools have become ridiculously competative. It kind of makes you want to remind them that there's a nursing shortage... :p

I'm so sorry that you didn't get in to your top choices right away, but I have no doubts that you will get in somewhere fabulous this time around. It's great to be young and carefree - you can go ANYWHERE! :) I'm not quite as young (23 when I applied), but I was excited about the possibilities of relocating. Besides, not all application processes are created equal - some are incredibly simple. You might as well spend 30 mins (and probably $30) applying, right?

Which San Jac campus do you attend? Where are you thinking of applying - anywhere outside of Texas? I'm honestly so excited for you. Let me know where you're applying! :redpinkhe

Sorry for the delay! It's been awhile since I've been on here... Well, anyways, I am applying to a few schools such as:

* Kilgore college BSN

* San Jac ADN

*Prairie View BSN

*Victoria College ADN

*Texas A&M International University BSN (MY FIRST CHOICE)

*Lamar University BSN

So far TAMIU is my first choice because their NCLEX pass rates are really high and all the faculty have been extremely helpful and nice. I'm taking an online Nursing culture class as one of their required pre-reqs. I can tell that they really care about nursing students. It's less competitive actually because it's not quite as known. My last choice is PV. I have had bad experiences with the professionalism and efficiency with them in the past and I would ONLY go if for some strange reason, I didn't get in A.N.Y.W.H.E.R.E. else. LOL! So, If you can, can you tell me as much as you can about the intensity of your program. (or better yet, What is the "day in the life as a nursing student?")

(crossing fingers)

good luck to all of you!!:redbeathe

Just curious....

who applied to the RN program at San Jac and what option did you use?

Hi, I want to apply this spring for the ADN program at San Jac and I was wondering if there were any specific things that I need to get taken care of in a hurry... The Alvin program requires the first series of Hepatits shots and the NET test.. Do you know if San Jac has any requirements like that ???

I know for sure san jac doesnt require the NET test and as far as the hepatitis shots I know that they are needed but thats about it. You mentioned you wanted to apply this spring... you mean for the fall semester right? I want to say that the application period for fall is between may 1- july 1.

good luck.
