We have to read like 300 pages in 1 week!

A lot of reading but most of it is just a refresher. The quiz is easy as well. The most difficult part I think will be determining how the instructor expects the narrative to be written and what specifically to include. The example in the resource section is horrible and if I am to follow the book verbatim for the objective part I would be taking a rectal temp which I very highly doubt anyone I select would let me do. Make sure you all look at the common errors guide as well; from reading past forums it sounds like that's the most frustrating part if this class.

    Hi Luna,

I completely agree with your post. Last night I finished week 1 and week 2 assignments, although I still have some polishing up to do, and I was wondering to myself why everyone says this class is so crazy. And, I concluded that it must be because of the grading in conjunction with the fact that there is no guidance on how exactly they want the narrative written. I have heard they take off lots of points for silly things and so, knowing that, it is very stressful for everyone. So, now I get it.

Yes, both sample assignments are worthless, in my opinion. And,the common error guide is a joke. For the expectation of subjective data, it says to "see lab manual." That's a big help.

I think we all could learn health assessment from this class just fine without the instructions being so vague about the assignments and then they punish us with points off for not doing it correctly when we were never told how to do it in the first place!

Anyway, here are some tips I've learned: don't forget to use mmHg after your BP reading and BPM after your pulse reading. And to include the scale for pain and pulses (e.g. 10 point scale for pain and 3+/4+ for pulse). My AC told us we don't have to include the address and phone # of our client in the biography section. Instead of the name, we should use initials.

Thanks for everyone coming to this forum. we have to rely on each other for support since we obviously can't rely on the instructors.

    more later.

Are you writing "on palpation pulse"...the rubric shows 25 points for technique but it seems so rhetorical when I change it.

    Hi,
I'm curious to know how much of the reading really is necessary? There is quite a bit and it's very detailed. Can you successfully pass the tests/quizes without thoroughly reading the text assigned reading?

Also, someone mentioned quizzes don't open until Fri mornings? Is that correct? It looked to me that they are DUE by 0800 Fridays.

    CONFUSED!

For the objective data the assignment directions state to use the proper sequence of assessment technique: Inspection, Palpation, percussion, auscultation. However, it also states to follow the text p. 81-82. There is no mention of heart tones, lung sounds, etc in the text. Are we to include these aspects of assessment or not?

Personally I do not think you need to memorize the information. Just skim it...I already took the test so I'm not sure where u heard that they don't open. I know you can't see the answers until after the test is due.

    Hi luna,

yes, i am including very specific details regarding the determination of pulse and everything else, despite the fact that it seems ridiculous and is never done in real life. but, if that's what it takes, whatever. so, i am saying which hand and which fingers of mine i used to palpate including the location of the pulse (e.g. radial artery located on the lateral wrist), etc. i think this is what they mean by "technique". could be wrong, but since i'm not sure and have no guidance for this, i'm just doing that i think they might want. probably will have a better idea after this first week's assignment is graded.

    hi registeredin06,
it seems to me we are only doing the items listed under phys assessment on p. 80 to 81, which does not include HR or lung sounds, even though we are doing "vital signs." i'm guessing that those things will be included later when we get to the cardiac and resp sections.

the proper sequence of inspection, palpation, percussion, auscultation comes into play in the week 2 assignment when we look at head, neck, ears, etc. in other words, you would "inspect" the head first and then palpate it for tenderness, then percuss the sinuses, 3rd. we need to make sure that is the order we follow.

just my opinion, so could be wrong.

I assumed the same, but got confused why all four techniques were mentioned in the rubric. I have an email out to coach, I'll let you know if WE DO NEED to include the others. I am kinda with you, this doesn't seem as bad as I expected so I am anticipating a lot of nit picky grading. I guess we'll see!

And...what's up with the example assigment?? An elderly oral assessment?? This doen's even pertain to our assignment. I don't know if I am looking at the wrong thing or what! Annoying.
