UTA Fall 2013

Nursing Students Texas (UTA)

Published

I thought I would start a thread for those applying to UTA for Fall 2013; AP or on-campus. I will be applying to both and am hoping to find a job at a partnered hospital before the January 5, 2012 deadline.

Got an A. So happy. My computer froze at the end, and I didn't get to answer the last question.

Don, are the clinicals difficult? I have no prior medical experience. Just curious. Thanks!

Hi

I got accepted into the AP BSN. Are you doing the AP too?

Good Luck :-)

Yes, AP BSN. :-) Good luck to you, as well. I live in Houston. Curious to see where I will end up doing clinicals!

I didn't answer the last question either ran out of time.

Gonna accept AP...love online format.

DISCLAIMER: This is for the AP BSN program only. The traditional (in-seat) program is different and is not accelerated.

To answer your questions, I'll start with the last question. Violach asked if the clinicals are difficult. The short answer is it depends. I don't come from the healthcare field in my normal Mon-Fri job. I have never worked in a hospital, and I am not partnered. I did not find clinicals difficult and enjoyed the heck out of it. I think that has alot to do with my clinical instructors and my own learning style... My clinical instructors were phenomenal and I learned alot from them. I know it was challenging for some, so it really does depend on you. But you need to ask yourself: Are you a go getter? Can you learn a skill or concept that was introduced to you through a textbook and/or video, and then apply that skill in the clinical setting? You will have to demonstrate proficiency through check offs.

JR1 is 14 weeks long. You take 3 classes, Foundations, Assessments, and Health Promotions. Out of the 14 weeks, I attended 11 weeks of clinicals that consisted of 2 days in a row every week. In my case, it was Saturday/Sunday. Each day was scheduled for 10 hours of clinical and skill labs. There were a 2 weeks where it was only 1 day, weeks 1 and 11. This was great for me since I work 40 hours a week Monday thru Friday. Testing days were a little more of a challenge but only because I had to take time off from work to drive to the testing center near me (I had to pay the testing fee myself) so I didn't have to drive all the way to Dallas for an exam that takes me 30 minutes to complete.

@stash11, to answer whether they stay the same until graduation, the answer is "maybe not". It might be for some locations, but for me it has changed. JR2 starts in a little over a month from now and I will have 6 weeks of Psych clinicals that are each 1 day a week, but 12 hour days. Then I'll have 5 weeks of Med Surg clinicals and those will be Friday/Saturday. Psych and Med Surg clinicals run consecutively, not at the same time (thank goodness).

The only day the seems to stay the same is my testing day. That is Wednesday.

There is a 2 week break between JR1 and JR2, but we already have assignments that are due day 1 of Psych, so that break will be used for completing those and reading. There is another 2 week break btw JR2 and SR1. Keep in mind that this is my cohort that started Spring 2013, if you start in the Fall, then it might be slightly different depending on where the holidays will fall during the semesters.

I know this was long winded, and I'm sure I missed something, but I hope I answered your questions.

Don

Thank you so much, yes you covered all of my questions, thank you so much. One thing though, how much is the total tuition for the AP BSN program?

Thank you
