Nursing Students Texas (UTA)

Published

I was considering going through this university for my RN- BSN.... The school claims the program is only 13 months and 6,450 if all you need are your core nursing classes... If you need pre-reqs it can still take you as little as 13 months, but it's an extra 349.00 per course... This seems very reasonable... Just wondering if anyone has gone through this program or is currently doing this program?

Don't take them at UTA! Take them somewhere less expensive, like a community college -- if you're in Tarrant County, go to TCC, whose tuition is $50 a credit hr. ALL of my nursing pre-req courses transferred from TCC (except the 3 nursing courses which I did take at UTA)... I'm sure you have considered doing this already, but just thought I'd throw it out there!

Thanks Mandinoel but I don't intend to take any courses at all at UT-A.

While I don't have any issues with taking another US history course (I only have one) and poli sci (my poli sci course is in American Constitutional Law) and the Texas history/politics course (which is unique to Texas and only really offered at Texas schools), after completing an ADN, a BA and an MBA - over 300 credits of both undergrad and grad college courses - I'm not willing to take (or more correctly re-take for some) the many additional undergrad non-nursing courses UT-A is insisting on.

One example: UT-A is insisting I take Tech Writing while ignoring my many courses with a much more significant research and writing component than ENGL 3373. Another: While accepting my Dev Psych course (for which Pysch 101 is a prereq - as it is for the other 4 Psych classes I've taken) they are requiring me to re-take Psych 101. While they haven't provided a reason for this, I can only guess it's because my basic psych class was titled Human Behavior I - Psych 001. I had the chairman of the Psych dept from my alma mater send UT-A a letter along with the catalog description, both of which provided more than ample evidence that the content of Psych 001 was actually signficantly more comprehensive than the UT-A eqivalent but the advisor still insisted that a take the intro to pysch course at UT-A.

This is beyond ridiculous and I will either go to another, more reasonable RN-BSN program or possibly directly to a second degree RN-MSN program.

You are not the first person I have heard the same complaints from. I most recently heard about somebody being told in their LAST semester of nursing school at UTA that they needed like 5 pre-req courses that the school aparently missed. They had clepped out of a couple of them, but in this last semester, UTA decided the clep grade wasn't high enough. The others were just "oversights" before they were admitted into the program! I REALLY hope that UTA doesn't pull this crap on me if I get in... I'm over the limit for frustration related to schools not having the right info. Good luck with your goals. If I already had my RN, I would DEFINITELY do the RN-MSN program... seems like a good idea.

Oh, and this person has a master's already, too... so they obviously have completed the components required for the core curriculum...

Has anyone applied for the Spring 2012 Start date for AP-BSN program?

So I am a student at UTA. I will be starting my second semester in the traditional program this Fall. I think the process of getting into UTA would be easier for you if you spoke to your nursing counselor. Bringing your transcripts helps a lot. Often they can tell you what is acceptable before the college receives your transcript. I know that the nursing programs strives to treat students fairly and follows the book with everyone. You can do some of the leg work yourself by looking at the BSN requirements and comparing your transcript with the equivalents for your particular college. I know the entrance process may be difficult to navigate but if you want a BSN you should be able to accomplish your goal without having to be guided every step of the way. You should drop off your transcripts in person to both the registrar and the college of nursing. Thursdays are for walk in advising, so show up early with your questions. The truth is UTA is in high demand. They cannot accommodate every special circumstance because it is not fair to the other applicants. Poke around the nursing website there is more information there than you might think. If your GPA is around 3.5 I would not get my hopes too high. The traditional program had 1300 applicants for Fall 2011 so GPAs as high as 3.7 were wait listed.

When you are referring to the GPA for the traditional, are you referring to the science GPA or Prereq?

Thanks!

I mean overall GPA. The sciences are most important. So if you have a 4.0 in sciences and a 3.5 in prereqs I would say that would be better. But if I were in that position I would be very worried. I applied with a 3.95 and a science of 3.75. Its hard to say what will work so I made it a point to keep my GPA as close to 4.0 as possible. I knew no matter what they would accept me. If I had gone any lower than a 3.8 I would have worried.

They say it all depends on the applicant pool. The group I applied in had around 500 apps so I know people got in with lower GPAs. I could have sworn a girl in pharm told me she had a 3.2 and I saw her in with my group. Yet the following applicant pool had the 1300 applicants and I spoke to students with 3.8s that were wait listed. I hear the applicant pool for fall is usually larger than for spring.

Let me know if you have anymore questions.

Does anyone have any information on Professional Nursing A & B and technical writing? I was considering taking both concurrently and was curious of the work load of each class. I am starting in the AP RN-BSN program in the Fall 2011 semester. Thanks in advance for any help!

@misspotsandpans

Thanks for the info! Yes, the total count was around 1300. But that included the AP and Traditional program of which the AP total alone was 700. So we can assume the traditional was around 600 applicants.

I think it largely depends on the science GPA. If 3.8 (assuming we are talking about the overall GPA) they may have had a low science GPA. I hate that we have to wait so long.

Glad to see you were accepted. How do you like it so far?

Alicia

Hi,

I did not take the technical writing class as I already had it before enrolling at UTA. Professional Nursing A & B is pretty straight forward. You take part A for 5 weeks and have a one week break and continue with part B for 5 weeks. It is very enjoyable. Sorry i cannot tell you about the tech writing. I am enrolled in 2 classes now; history and nursing class. The history class is pretty intense, the nursing class; not bad at all! But again, it depends, i work full time so that's another thing you should consider. Good luck!

chybabe,

thank yo so much for your response. i also work full time and am worried i might be taking on too much at one time? however, i think i'm just gonna dive right in and see how it goes. i figure it's only five weeks and if it is too much i will just put my all in it and then scale down next semester. which nursing class are you taking right now? good luck to you and thanks again! :)
