Hospital under fire

by Smiler3

Just wanted to vent my anger and fustration at all the bad press BCH is getting at the moment!

The news never focus on the good work us nurses and Dr's do!!

Wouldn't you just ove to invite the press to work one of our 12 hour shifts with us and see how hard we work!

Grrr x x

The press love to blame everyone but the right ones and it always seems to be the nurses fault.

Sorry you are going through this

I've read the news reports and it although it's horrible to be subject to such criticism if it means your trust gets it's act together and organising specialist training and recruits experienced staff then at least some good will come of it.

It's horrible to be under close scrutiny, as smiler said the good news stories are rarely reported so the public at large get a very negative view of healthcare.

I feel for all of the front line staff that are under pressure to perform with limited resources.

Just watched 'Dispatches: Confessions Of A Nurse' on Channel 4 and I am absolutely disgusted and infuriated that yet AGAIN, all the blame for the short comings of the NHS and patient care is placed with the Nursing staff.

No mention of doctors, cleaners, health care assistants or any other hospital worker was made, everything it would seem, is entirely the fault of the Nurses.

Whilst many of the stories were very sad and highlight the real issues within the NHS, I am alarmed that the population of the UK now assumes we are all idiots who sell our knickers on eBay and pole dance around IV stands during shifts.

I have witnessed some bad care delivered to patients by ALL staff groups, but I have also seen some excellent care and have had Mentors who were dedicated, compassionate and amazing Nurses who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to care for their patients. This programme has done nothing but sell our entire profession short.

I have just seen dispatches and yes it is nurses that are being hit at, but I felt that the point coming across to the viewer was that it was the not for the lack of nurses wanting to provide good care more so it was the situation and environment of the hospital. Lack of staff, no support for staff who complained about the situation, and staff working in inhumane conditions, how would any other professions fare if they were expected to work 12 hours without a break and not even be able to get to the toilet because they hadn't had the time to drink or go? Interested to see if this opens the floodgates to other hospitals etc., whistleblowing on events...hope so!!

It does all boil down to us nurses, I missed the tv programme as ooh I was at work finishing off my 12 hour shift!
Yeah there are some nurses out there who really don't care or do any work, but the majority of us care and work our asses off!!!
The news were moaning about our PICU not having enugh beds....what can you do..they are closing other childrens wards as DGH's, which gives our hospital less beds to transfer out to which in turn causes bed blocking! Stupid!

I think it's time for a tv crew to follow the good work and had work us nurses do! ooh it just angers me!

I thought the dispatches programme was not as bad as it could have been... They seem to agree that if nurses had fewer patients to look after we'd be able to do a better job!! Which seems to point the fingers for poor care back at the managers.

But overall it seemed to be more 'patients moaning about staff' rather than confessions of nurses.
I don't get on the internet much any more (credit crunch and all ) but after this show I did look my Trust up on the patient opinion website...

Ooh Whisper which website is that then? would be interested to look a few up myself!

I'm sure I took part in that survey that helped shape the tv programme, was it a YouGov survey? You know if managers we not paid so much to sit bhind a desk and do buger all and the money was spent on nurses where it's needed maybe there wouldn't be this problem!

The NHS is in such a state and I wonder if part of it is because there are so many unemployed and peope on benefits the money isn't being paid into the fund! but thats just a hunch!

I had a placement in and A&E dep as a student and was amazed by the rudeness and ungreatfulness of people, parents dialing 999 for their child when they had constipation, then once in the departent fed them with crisps and chocolate from the machine, while they ran around bored! Another time I remember being stood waiting to receive an patient from an ambulance whilst the child was wheeled in receiving cardiac masssage from a nurse, a parent came up to me and asked why that child was being seen before them and that they had been there for an hour already! I was totally gobsmacked!
