Nursing Students in the UK - Page 2

=well i'm on a neurosurgical ward at present and having to deal with confused patients and having some experince of it is not limited to Care of the elderly.
I like working with older patients confused or not, and confised i find need that little bit more and give me more reward when i can get a respond and have and effect.
i also get a reason to be a nurse by giving terminal care, patients on the liverpool intergrated pathway, and in my developing way to their famillies.

I would just like to find out if any of you have ever doubted your ability to become a nurse? I am applying to Manchester Uni next year, but am a bit worried as I am not doing to well in my anatomy and phisiology at the moment, but I do know this is the career I would love to do.
Any thoughts would be most appreciated

I know exactly how you feel mate. i am a mature student and before starting i was a senior manager for a very large company and hadnt had any experience in anatomy or physiology and it must of been at least 7 years since i ever sat down and even studied. but i am finding it ok and i am 6 months into the course. just be pro-active in your approach to your learning and try and find out what is likely to be in it and just work your hardest. also ultilis your teachers, i am sure they wouldnt mind getting togeather with you and helping you with the bits you dont understand. most teachers i have ever had experience with will do anything to help you achieve your goal, however they wont do it for you and you mst be pro-active.

Never say never. i had to sell my house and car and move back into my parents to be able to afford to do adult nursing at university. so if you want it bad enough you will get it and even surprise yourself with how well you will do.

Thanks for the reply. I too am a mature student (very mature ). So far it's been a pretty interesting road for me, I quit my job and now work part time. I am going to college and am doing an Access course because it's been
+- 22 years since I last studied. My determination to reach my goals are very high because I want it so bad. I am really trying my best but do get stuck hear and there, I will however ask my teachers for better understanding I'm sure they will be willing to help me. The college I attend is very helpful, and I have a great tutor. Thanks for the encoragment I feel a lot better about it already

hi, i was never allowed to do venapuncture as a student nurse and i had to take it upon myself to do the course after qualifying, same goes for male catherterisation, i trained at sheffield uni, and have been qualified 4 years, i also did the diploma, and it never stopped me from progressing in my work place.

my current ward neurosurgical is a mix of spinal and neuro.
due to beds etc we have had an admission of a 18yr old bloke who broke his spine due to a road traffic accident with a lorry and not his fault.
so amonsgt the confused neuro pts we have this young man a rugby player in traction and waiting surgery, scared and anxious i think age doesn't matter wish out hospital had volunters to just be with a patient feel guilty when i have to leave him to care for other patients

Thats great, I'm on the 2 year access, because there wern't any places on the 1 year. I will be applying for the 2008 intake next year.

So are you doing social sciences? this was what was offered at the college I used for the 2 year and the one year was life sciences, lots of chem etc!

I am currently in New Jersey, came here in Oct last year for husbands job but we hate it so am going back in 7 weeks, got to finish my application today for nursing.

I should be lucky as the uni I will use offer shorted couses for people with an NVQ level 3 in care which I also have so my training should be 2 years as I get to skip year 1. Also I have been working prior to moving here as an HCA in my local hospital on the bank, my contract is still open so I return to that.

I'm doing the health and physiology, psychology and sociology plus another 2 subjects. You are lucky to get a shortend course I've got the long road as I don't have any NVQ'S. Best of luck to you at least you have a job waiting which always helps
