Want to travel to California; need info

by m_kae_s

Hi-
I am currently looking to travel in California. Could anyone give me some names of hospitals they have traveled to? I would like to do a little research before I tell my recruiter to sign me up. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Cali-Greetings to you!

CA is a huge state--I live in San Diego County which is appx an 7-8 hr drive to northern CA---San Francisco. I'm 30 minute south of the Orange County (OC)border and the most northern part of San Diego. Narrow down your location a bit and maybe I can help you.
Are you looking for starz and glitz( i.e hollywood) or coastal beauty (i.e.San Diego , Santa Barbara beaches?), or mountain highs?

Housing---cost of living--salary- is quite high as you head north and goes down a bit as you head south- until you hit Del Mar, Torrey Pines, La Jolla , where it again becomes $$$$.

Best Wishes

I did a travel assignment last summer in Escondido, just north of San Diego, at Palomar Medical Center. It was a nice hospital and the people are very accepting of travelers. I loved the surrounding areas and we enjoyed ourselves alot. Good Luck.

Hi, Cali-bound! I've had travel assignments in the Bay Area of CA. One assignment was at Stanford in Palo Alto (thirty-minutes out of SF and in the heart of the Silicon Valley) The hospital, people at the hospital and the area make for a great experience. Not all units in the hospital are the same, though, and some are better than others. I think this is true of any hospital. If you do take an assignment at SUMC (Stanford) request to stay at Oak Creek Apartments. Oak Creek is within walking distance of the hospital and the complex is amazing. I'm going out to Cali in July to hike with a nurse who works at Stanford. The nurse I refer to is very outgoing and I know she would be happy to help you get familiar with the area. A caveat about one hospital that travelers hate in the Bay Area, Oakland Kaiser. I've heard too many travelers say they where treated like dirt there. I think each Kaiser hospital is unique, though. I know of travelers who loved working at Kaiser Redwood City...a short distance from Stanford. I think your interests will dictate where you want to stay. I've also heard good things about UCSF in SF. In a little more than a year I saw all the tourist things and then joined a hiking club (Sierra Singles) to see the real beauty the area has to offer. Soooo much to see and do! Best wishes, Benton

My daughter did a three month assignment at Torrance Memorial and hated every minute of it. Now she's taken a staff position at Cedar Sinai in Beverly Hills and says she loves it. If this is your first traveling assignment, PLEASE be sure to talk to some seasoned travelers regarding your housing and your contract in general. Also, don't forget income taxes. It makes a difference whether you declare a permanent residence or not.

I just completed a the longest four months of my entire life. I am a psych nurse, and spent a seventeen month assignment at Bakersfield Memorial's Psych facility. The management, and the staffing is horrendous. So much for the 6:1 ratio. I found that they only complied when it was convenient. Much to my surprize the same things were happening at the main hospital per ICU nurses there. I will say that Californians in general are very nice, warm, and welcoming. If you find a good facility it will be well worth it. Ask other travelers from that facility before accepting an assignment. Get the phone number, and call in the middle of the night. Someone will tell you the truth if you ask for it. Good luck, and have fun!

Default Travel Agency Review
A while ago I was wandering around the internet and came across a website that had a section where travel nurses could rate the travel companies they had traveled with. Now that I am actually interested and ready to travel I cant find that site again. Can anyone help me out, for some reason I think the word "hobo" was either in the title of the page or in the address. I know that isnt a lot to go on but that is all I have Also the main page was brownish in color and the site was run by a travel nurse. Well I am going to thank everyone in advance for what ever help they can give me. Or even if you know of a site that might be just as good as the one I mentioned I would appreciate that site address also. Thanks all

I did a 13 week assignment at Walnut Creek Kaiser and will never work for another Kaiser again. They run the place on the backs of the nurses and it can be on scary place. Walnut Creek is a great place to live . Just east of San Francisco and lots to see and do.
