Travel Question - Housing Stipend etc.

Hi all - this site is so helpful for those wanting to hit the road! I have a question and appreciate any responses. I am going to travel in a year. My husband and I are going to go the RV route. We are leaving the midwest and do not plan to return. We plan to travel in the West starting in San Diego. Am I correct in understanding that since we do not plan to keep a "tax home" (no reason to come back here) then the housing stipend and any other "tax free" reimbursements will be subject to being taxed at the end of the year? We do have family in San Diego and will likely want to spend more time there than on our other travels. If we create a permanent address at a trailer park in San Diego then would I still be eligible for the travel stipend while working in San Diego or only when we travel elsewhere? I do plan to be in touch with a knowledgeable tax professional as we get closer but need to know how to plan ahead. Again, thanks so much for any information you can give!

Check out traveltax.com. There is a very informative FAQ's section that can answer all of your questions.

traveltax is a good resource. If you do not have a permanent tax home, yes, any stipend you would get will be taxed. And from what I gather, it is taxed at the time it is paid rather than at the end of the year.
