  1. 0 is it smarter to go through a travel company (which ones?) or to sign up for temporary/seasonal work directly with the hospital - from experience? thanks

It depends. You may get more hourly from typical Florida or even Arizona in-house seasonal travel, but sometimes not. Your taxes will be more difficult as a hospital will not deduct for your home state (you will either have to pay quarterly or may have to pay some penalties year-end) and hospital will withhold taxes for housing benefits. You can deduct them yourself end of the year, but it will be subject to thresholds, and of course the FICA you pay on housing is not refundable (it was 30 years ago but no more).

Just like choosing between two agencies or two assignments, you have to get the numbers and crunch them for yourself.
