yes, i know, picking a travel company is very dependent on what one wants. however there are things ever travel nurse may want:

great pay

accomodation + utilities paid for

car allowance perhaps

benefits

guaranteed hours in a great hospital

location, location, location

a supportive company

from what i have read these companies are a no no:

the "eveil empire": american mobile healthcare, medical express, nursechoice in demand, nursesrx, preferred healthcare staffing, thera tech staffing, medtravelers, mti staffing, rn demand, o'grady-peyton international, merritt, hawkins & associates, and staff care, inc.

world health - they are being investigated for tax fraud.

who has done their homework or from personal experience...is willing to share their list of the best comapnies out there that meets the above criteria??

a thread with a good list of all these companies would help so many of us just starting out.

for myself personally, i would love to work in new york, san francisco, miami, or somewhere in hawaii.

After reading forums, I have seen Cross Country mentioned as being pretty good. I haven't traveled yet, so cannot speak from experience, but CC has some good comments.

I am currently with Nova Pro, a sister company of Cross Country. Experiences with companies are often recruiter dependent. I have had major housing problems resolved to my satisfaction so far by Nova Pro, and have also hada good working relationship with my recruiter. Let me tell you, these folks really hustled to make a bad situation not only workable, but pleasant. I could not have been happier. They paid for my hotel between finding me a better place, and gave me a beautiful upgrade at no charge to me. I could not have asked for better. They delivered.

Recruiter is prompt, accessible, and fair. She works with an assistant, and they make sure all my documentation is tip top. Never had a problem with a check. They are on the ball.

Did my first assignment with PPR out of Jacksonville Beach, FL. They pay $1-2 lower than most, but have top-of-the-line housing, and the support I received from them when I became unexpectedly ill and could not physically finish my contract was fabulous. I did not have to pay any penalties whatever, and it could have gone the other way, as seasoned travelers know. I am not with them for this assignment only because they could not get me where I wanted to go, but they have plenty of assignments everywhere. The support and willingness to trust *me* once me over. I've had a good working relationship through the entire thing.

I would recommend both of these companies highly. Do your research! But remember, you a responsible for what you sign and agree to. Any questions, geted nailed down in writing before you sign. Be fair and flexibile. Treat people the way you'd like them to treat you, and you should have a professional working relationship with your recruiter.

Other companies I have researched and spoken to recruiters, but not signed on to: Nigthingale Nurses and Trinity, and On Assignment.

i've been traveling 6 yrs. i am so sure you will like my ideas that i figure i can really and truly help you a lot.

my pick is none of the companies you've nmentioned. why? i can do a lot better with a pick.

first of all, the company is on assignment. they are excellent. you can get a good rate without fighting for it and they include a car with car insurance all paid for. the housing always is top notch with all housewares and they are soooo nice. my recruiter is xxx. x is wonderful and is truly caring.

my name is stacy and x will know me immediately when you say from fl. i've recommended x and the agency at least 7 times. i've gotten excellent feedback from everyone i've sent. trust me, they have bennies and the whole situation will floor you. they are one of the last agencies that have what all nurses want and need.

good luck!;) ;) ;)

My comments were x'd out. I didn't realize that AllNurses does that. I just saw that my feedback was edited. However, you can send me a private message and I can discuss this further with you.

I'm with On Assignment too, about to start my fourth assignment with them. I'm pretty picky and want to stay in the VA area, and I've been lucky so far even though they rarely list jobs there other than DC area. I did work one in NC and it was ok too. They are good with housing, very nice apartments.

I worked one assignment with World Health and didn't have any problems with them. The branch I was with has again reverted to the name of Travel Nurse Solutions. The only fault I found with them is that they house you in extended stay rather than an apartment (Candlewood or Hannaford Suites, among others) but the plus there is housekeeping services :) They had limited assignments and I didn't get where I really wanted to go, but the pay was good and I *always* got paid.

I would like to become a travel nurse too, and so i am glad the question was asked, and is being answered for my benefit. Thank YOu guys :) But i am a little disappointed because NurseRX is "a No No"

I was screwed in a contract by one in the evil empire back in 2002..

read LOTS of forums, and get a good feel for the general vibes of the company. One persons bad contract doesn't mean its a bad company.. may be a bad recruiter.. but when majority speaks bad about a company.. don't ignore the red flags!

search for other forums.. not all nurses come here and there are others out there.. this one by far is the most active.. but others also have good info as well.

good luck to you.. aim high.. As a nurse, your worth it.

I disagree with at least one of the evil companies. I've been with medical express for several years. and love everything about them/. my recruiter is so trust worthy and truthful with me and really fights for me. I've never been screwed over and always are in the best apartments, and evrything ready. no problems in anything if you want I'll refer you to my recruiter she's is the best and I love her to death.

How much did they pay you to say that? I'd like to know who your recruiter is. I have had a horrible experience with Medical Express. They have absolutely lived up to the "evil empire" reputation they have achieved.

Not one cent I've been with them for almost three years. This was the first company I went with. My recruiter is Jackie Nelson, and she has been nothing but up front with me. I love traveling with them and know she will take care of everything for me, I will be with them until they do screw me over then I'm gone but so far it's been great.

Hope you find someone who takes care of you like jackie takes care of me. You can check this out, I'm working currently at a children's hospital in Ft Myers.
