Skype Interview with Cruise Line

I have just gotten the opportunity to interview via Skype for a cruise ship nurse position. I have never used Skype before, let alone have an interview that was not in person. I plan on doing a few practice trials with my family to make sure I know how to work Skype, and choose the right background and clothing. Does anyone have any other suggestions regarding this new way of interviewing?

I'm also interested in hearing from others who have worked as a cruise nurse. It seems very hard to find any first hand info from those who have experience.

How exciting! Dh and I talked seriously about trying for a cruse ship job or nursing at a resort somewhere, but never did anything about it. I will be glad to read any thoughts anyone ele has and how the interview goes for you. Good luck!

Is this really a video interview? I've only ever used Skype for voice. If video, I'm going to guess your clinical skills are already acceptable. What they are probably looking for is if you are attractive and personable. While it wouldn't be strictly legal for them to rule you out based on weight, the video will allow them to assess you on that while a written application or voice interview would not give them that information.

Yup, it's a video interview! I guess they are opting for video since their headquarters is halfway across the country from me.

I don't think so. Never had a hospital require a video interview and that kind of assignment is far more important to get right.

DH and I have talked about me doing this once our kids have grown up, so I've got many many years to prepare. I can't wait to hear all about it and anyone else's experiences!

In regards to seeing if you are attractive, maybe that's it but I will just say that I was just on a cruise over the weekend and saw two of the nurses responding to medical emergencies... and on this cruise line I don't think attractiveness was a requirement.

Just wear what you would to a real interview and make sure you don't have anyone else visible or heard in the background. Not a good time for a photobomb. As long as your house isn't a horder hole I wouldn't worry that they will be able to see your couch in the back. Good luck! I worked on a cruise ship a long time ago. It is a weird lifestyle with such tiny living quarters. If you like to travel slowly and hang out with drunk rich people you should like it a lot.

What would be your theory then to require a video interview? Never happens for the placement of over 50,000 travel assignments every year by hospitals dependent on passing close regulatory scrutiny on the clinical abilities and performance of their contingent staffing.

Most cruise lines are owned and based in the Bahamas and other countries. I don't know of any owned by American companies. So if their home offices are based out of the country, why not Skype? I'm sure its to make sure you are personable. That is more important to cruise companies than being skinny or cute.

That is what I said: attractive and personable. While a good 300 pound clinician may be perfectly acceptable to a hospital, I can understand that to a pure service oriented company that it might not be.
