OR Travel Nurses

by MJN2007

Can anyone tell me about their experience as a Travel Nurse in the operating room? I currently work in a pediatric hospital and have been an OR nurse for nearly two years. I'm thinking about traveling, and would love to hear some stories. Also, what's the best advice to prepare for travel nursing?

I did a travel assignment after having only 1 year of experience in the OR. I did fine, and I never felt like I didn't have enough experience. Unless you are at a childrens only hospital, you will not be doing just pediatrics though. In travel assignments you will be doing different services GI, GU, Neuro, Ortho ENT, not just your specialty service. If you could rotate through some different services at your current job, that would help you in travel nursing. Travel nursing is great! You should definitely try it!

I agree with Alisabeth, just don't take all the jobs away from us older nurses. I don't know what I will do if I have to stop traveling. Get comfortable with what you know. Don't be afraid to admit you don't know. It's much better to be honest and get help up front instead of trying to get someone to bail you out.
