Old RN-New traveler- advice?

Old RN-New traveler- advice?


Firstly I want to say THANK YOU to all who post here, the information I have received will be invaluable to me when I (hopefully) take my first travel assignment after 25 years of nursing. My question is this- I have a lovely recruiter, whom I trust and would like to work with. She has told me, and I have seen here, that the hospitals in Kentucky, where I really want to travel, are at this time not hiring travelers. Now should I also be working with another agency? Do some have access to jobs that are not available to others? I really don't want to do multiple recruiters, but am I shooting myself in the foot by staying with one?

You may find that some areas/hospital work exclusively with certain agencies, usually one of the big ones. In better economic times this is not so much of an issue as when there are plenty of jobs, those that don't get filled by the preferred agency are then let out to other agencies under a subcontract. In the current climate you may find it to your advantage to go with more than one agency if you want to get to specific places. You may even want to call human resources in those hospitals and inquire if there is a specific agency they use.
You might also want to be a bit flexible as to areas you are willing to travel to in order to get started traveling right now - the market is pretty tight.

Your recruiter was right. Travel positions in Kentucky are always few and far between, despite the nursing shortage here.

Thanks for the advice. My boyfriend is an MD in KY, he offered to call around to the hospitals to see what agencies they use. As for flexibility, I am traveling to be nearer to him, so if I can't get into a KY hospital I might just stay where I am in NY and wait out the current state of things...

I've heard Kentucky was tight to get into as well. But that being said, I'd definitely talk to some other agencies. You also might be able to set up a local contract with a local per diem agency, might be worth looking into. Just an idea.

You are very welcome, please post when you are hired and arrive safely in Kentucky. I am not sure where this job is located at other than in the state of Kentucky, but across a state from your boyfriend is much better than across the nation.
