Lots of good info to be found online about travel nursing. Lots of opinions too. This forum is a good place to start. I looked at Highway Hypodermics (website) as a place to begin, there is factual information there. Now for my opinion: Your experience and diversity makes you suited as a travel nurse. Your last statement about "afraid" to go alone needs work. Hey, you have raised kids, worked for 20 years and now live on your own. Travel is a great choice. I started traveling in August of 2010 and I love it. I have a husband of 38 years, but he is still at home. Its been great to be alone learning and experiencing new things by MYSELF. A new found confidence and freedom for starters. I have figured out how to navigate my way through St Thomas, Virgin Islands and Washington DC, 2 of the most diverse places you'll find, and I love it. You know how to care for women and babies, you have to be willing to see and adapt to how its done in another setting, and figure out - with help from the staff- how to chart it. Here's an idea, think of a place you would like to visit/work, then call a few companies and tell them your interest and background. Companies do not specialize in types of assignments, ie, obstetrics for the most part. Facebook has a page for travel medical professionals too, another place to start.

Good luck

You should have plenty of experience. I have a friend in the same specialty. I haven't talked with her for several years though. Maybe you will run into her if you start traveling. There is a lot of information on this site about travel nursing. I check it almost daily. Don't respond to everything but I try to share some things I feel are important. Check my other posts, a lot of them are about RV's, some about Taxes and others are advise to other travel nurses. If you have specific questions after all that reading, post them here and someone will respond. As far as the companies and such, you have to make your own decision after contacting a few. Don't take the first one on the list call several and feel them out. They will try to sell you on them and promise you what ever it takes to get you to use them. Remember the nursing adage, "if it's not documented it wasn't done". and you will do fine. Travel nursing is mostly a single person job. You will meet lots of friends in your travel and maybe run into them from time to time, but trying to get a group of your friends into the same hospital or the same city will limit your job possibilities more than what would be financially advantageous. Everyone waiting for that one job opportunity. Good luck and enjoy your adventure.

I have met many travelers that are married, children at home with Dad or Mom, or spouse home with the animals. That number has grown the last few years.
