I'm making $33.00 hour working as staff nurse on Med/Surg unit.I'm working 12 hour shifts 3 days a week. I am thinking about quiting and doing local travel assignments with a travel company with contracts so that I am garanteed work. Now that I have read many post I don't think I would be making any more that I am making now because I won't be traveling 50 miles or more. And are you guys making money because of the deductions you can write off or what? Can a local traveler make more than I make at my cuurent job?One travel company offered me $440.00 a 12 hour shift after taxes does that sound right. Is there any nurses out there doing local travel assignments in los angeles.Pleeeeese Help Me. I need to make a decison, the right decision.

Why not supplement you earnings by taking a local per diem spot. Work one day extra a week.

There IS NO 50 mile rule in the IRS rules. That's a rule the hospitals arrived at so all their staff wouldn't go to traveling.

If you have a tax home and meet the requirements in pub463 you can deduction your daily meals and incidentals . You can also deduct your mileage to and from your travel position.

In order to be a travel position you have to be far enough from work in order to need to rest before you return to work. IN other words you can't go home every night.

If you take a local travel jobs, yes you can take the housing stipend and pay taxes on it . Or you could negotiate a higher say $5-10 higher rate.

If I were you I'd go per diem at another hospital, clinic, LTC etc and keep my regular job is all you want is to work in your general area.

Good luck. You can PM if you need more info.
