Hi there,

I want to start local travel nurse job here in GA. I cant travel far a way from home because of my Kids...plapla...so I decided for local. but kind of feeling the pay rate is not tempting and I am afraid that IRS would tax me on my housing stipend. hourly 25$/hr, food stipends 210/ wk, and housing is 500$/ wk

in general I wanted to drive back home every night. and drive back 60 miles to work the next day.

Do I qualify for that stipend. or I will be doing a dangerous in the dark adventure.

You do not qualify for tax free stipends of any kind any more than any other employee commuting from home. If the agency won't withhold taxes on those stipends, you are required to report it as ordinary income on your tax return.

First, I am thankful for the reply.

But if I went back home every tow to three nights and stayed at local residence in those days..is that a good 💡..

You would have to prorate the stipends.

Whats the point in being rude? Why even comment if youre not going to answer the ladies question?

No defense really. But asking to define common word is a bit much. In any case, rather than berate me, perhaps you could be helpful to the OP. Kettle, right?

Some of the post on this site make me nervous that some are actual nurses.

Prorate stipends would mean if that travel nurse is only using a hotel for 3 days, then that nurse would get three days worth of housing and M&I non taxable. The rest would be taxable. I am assuming that's what Ned meant.

Personally I think ALL tax question need to be discussed with an attorney or accountant.

I would ask the agency, they know the routine. I think back when I traveled it was 50 miles to be considered non-taxable.

The agency can certainly deliver stipends tax free, but they won't be present at your audit, nor can there be any defense if you are commuting from home. Back taxes, interest, and penalties over several years of cheating could be life changing.

I am a traveler positioned in my home state currently. I'm surgical but there are needed ER rns currently at this facility. Any ER RNs looking to travel to Milwaukee, WI at the present for a 13 week assignment? Good hospital!
