I saw a lot of young inexperienced travel RNs get totally ripped off by American Mobile companies when I was in CA for a year. Some of the nurses were getting 66% of my hourly for the same job, and were given lousy shared housing with inconsiderate or thieving strangers. Extensions were always a ripoff and they would leave them stranded in a heartbeat. Worst travel company I heard of besides Nurses in Partnership.

I travelled with AMN for 2 years and I regret it. I went with them when I first became a travel rn because they were in all the magazines and seemed to be the most popular. Every time I took an assignment, if I wanted to extend the pay got decreased by 0.50 - $1.00 per hour. I am sorry but you can't tell me the facility is doing that. Once I started talking to other travelers I realized I was getting a bad deal. Now I work for a company that has FREE private housing w/ linens, cable, phone, appliances, pots and pans, rental car, and airfare all included, plus $30 - 35 / hour every contract. Sorry, AMN can't even come close to that. Plus when I working for them I didn't even know they didn't provide long or short term disability. Now I make sure any company I goes with has that. AMN is too big of a company to be so cheap. They are getting 3x's what you are and still wanna pay crappy while nurses work like dogs. LOL. Like I said before, I really wish I would have know a traveler to ask questions to before I started.

    WHO DO YOU TRAVEL WITH?????

I don't pay for private housing with my agency. In fact, I just took a virtual tour of the private apt I will be occupying for my next assignment- Master suite, 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, washer/dryer, phone, cable TV, fireplace, utilities, linens/dishes, furniture, etc provided and paid for by my agency. The pay is great, and my recruiter is very nice, too.

I've gotten calls from lots other agencies- including American Mobile. they offered me $16.00 per hr less than I am getting now, for a nearly identical assignment.

I worked with the sister company of AM which was Medical Express. Horrible experience, but I learned a lot about traveling. I live in Jersey and got a assignment in Santa Barbara, CA. I told my recuiter that I will fly out there and I also have a cat. A couple of days before my flight my recuiter "forgot that I had a cat" and put me in shared housing. Also my apartment was in the next town and my recuiter told me to take buses. The whole reason that I went was because I had signed the contract to fast and the would sue me rent even though I haven't even left yet. When I got to Santa Barbara, I had to pay 500 a mouth for a rental car, because the bus system was a joke. My roommate had company all the time. I had to pay my mom to watch my cat. After that I got what I wanted from my assignments. I never signed a contract and I will not leave untill all my request are in writing. Now I'm back to being a staff nurse and I miss traveling around the country. I'm bored

Man, Nicmac. It sounds like you got a raw deal all the way around. I travel and have never had to share an apartment. I have another friend that travels with her husband and son and another that travels with her cat. None of that has ever been a problem. The only people I have met from my company that have had roommates are nurses that WANT to room together because they travel together.

Several months ago I got a letter from AMN asking me to contact them about a travel assignment. Could not do it d/t hubby being ill. Later I got another card asking me to call. After talking to the recruiter, I would never consider working for these jerks. They don't pay well, have little concern for the nurse, and are not interested in the nurse who may ask too many questions about the benefits, housing, other perks that many companies are giving their staff.

    Hi there.
I am a traveler with American Mobile and I am very happy with them. PM me and I can give you further details. I have been with them for one year now. I am on travel assignment with my navy retired husband, my 1 year old son and my 3 year old daughter. I have been a nurse for about 3 years now, so this is very new to me. And I am NICU. I have had a very good experience. Let's chat

How long ago did you travel with American Mobile. I have been with American Mobile for over one year now. I have a 2 bedroom apartment I do not pay for. I have a 3 year old and a one year old and my husband I travel with. He is not a travel nurse. Our apartment is also furnished. I don't care much about having linens, since I don't feel that is very sanitary. I have been at the same assignment now for close to one year in November. I have extended 4 times,(at the same hospital) my pay is still $35/hour, (composite pay) It is not a HIGH demand hospital (since sometimes hospitals really are in need of nurses/travelers thus the pay is higher) As a matter of fact, the census has been very low lately and I hear some agencies/hospital will cancel your contract. Not American Mobile. I have been very pleased and have always communicated all my concerns. My first assignment paid me $33. No copay for my apartment or anything. I am very happy with them and you always have the recourse of speaking to the operations manager in charge of your recruiter to handle unfair issues. They WILL always help you out. You just HAVE to speak up and they know you can always go to another company . They don't want lose you.

I forgot to say I also do not pay utilities.

I worked for them a year ago. From May 2003 to May 2004. I prefer not to work for a company that I have to demand things from. The job of being a nurse is stressful enough for that. It is good that you have had a good experience with them though. But you and one friend of mine are the only 2 I know who has, which is too rare. And like said in my previous posts, long term and short term disability , rental car, and airfare is important for me when I travel, big housing subsities are my priority when I travel close to home. And these AMN travelers in San Diego make absolutely nothing, plus pay for private housing or have to give up something in order to get it. It is good that you don't let them get over on you and that if they have a good assignment to offer it may be possible for other travelers to get the perks and benefits they deserve
