Getting ready to travel, what does your spouse do?

I'm an L&D RN, been a nurse for 12 years, and I'm seriously looking for my first travel assignment. I've been working PRN two nights a week for the past couple of years and I homeschool my kids. My S.O. has a 90-mile commute (one way) to work five days a week and it's bleeding him dry (physically, not to mention gas and wear and tear on the car). He has put in his notice at work, and he and the kids are coming with me. I know that I will be able to make enough money for all of us, but I think he would feel better if he could contribute a little bit financially. I'm looking for ideas on ways he can make money while on the road. We'll have our laptop and internet whereever we go. He'll still need to be home to watch the kids while I'm working, so a work-at-home thing would be best. He's thought about selling on Ebay, but the problem with that is that we won't have room for him to store the things he's selling. Any other ideas? His background is in IT, but he's a smart guy and can learn just about anything. A small business would be ideal, rather than working for someone else.

In each hospital you work put up a flyer to hsopital employees needing tech support for their home computers. Make sure he charges a professional wage. He will get plenty of work.

We found the solution to be a home business with Usana Health Sciences. We did some research and found it to be the top network marketing company as ranked by Business Week and Forbes. There are tons of network marketing companies out there; one may be a good fit for your husband. Most of them offer perks such as no employees, no set hours, tax breaks and lots of flexibility. My husband liked that he could have a business of his own regardless of where we were and what travel job I was working.

(I also like this company as I can help people with health and prevention--a nice change of pace from all the sickies I see in the ED)

For information about Network Marketing check out this link: http://www.usanapresentationpro.com/...x.php?PID=3068
(of course, it contains some Usana specific info, but much of the link is related to network marketing in general)

If an agency tells you that they have the 'tax advantage' program...is this something that one must participate in? do you have an option? It is my understanding that you cannot deduct certain items on your taxes at the end of the year and it would not be wise to actually take the tax advantage.

anythoughts??

There are some IT jobs that he can do from home...They are infomatics ish. I don't remember the TOS about mentioning names of companies, but I know two in particular if you want to PM me. If he has his Master's degree or a wealth of experience in IT, he could possibly teach an IT class online.

Hi, I am just beginning prereqs for nursing school, but I have an idea for your husband. How about medical transcription? I have been working at home as an MT for about 2 years now. (Gee, that sounds like an infomercial, sorry!). I went back to school with Career Step, an online school, www.careerstep.com), graduated in less than a year and started working less than a month later. I love it. It is super flexible. You can do it anywhere there is an internet connection. The pay is not super, but I am an IC and have total flexibility, which makes up for it, in my mind--that plus the fact that I had been a stay at home Mom for 16 years so anything I make now is more than before! Just losing the 15 hours of travel time a week for him will save your family money.

Another school that people recommend is M-tec, www.mtecinc.com

I still visit the Career Step forums every day, and they have a number of male students/graduates.

Good luck in whatever you and he decide.

If by chance have you thought about traveling with an RV, (not sure how many kids you have). While we are on assignemnt my hubby works at the campground and usually it is for maybe 20 hrs a week, various job avaiable and it pays for the campsite. Housing reimbursement goes in our pocket them. Just a thought, good luck (website: workamper.com)

Does your husband ever have trouble finding a job at the campgrounds?
I'm a travel nurse and me and my husband are just taking the apartment right now but thinking about getting an RV. My husband does IT work but have been having trouble finding work for a 3 month period of time. He is working on a web design business but it might take a little while to get that off the ground.
